Eggs, Lambs and Paddocks: Dog Friendly Stays on a Working Farm Across the UK

Written by Sam Wright

"Working farm" turns out to be a broad church once you read the listings closely, and that breadth is half the appeal. At Earth Ship above Loch Leven guests can help collect the chickens' eggs and, in spring, give the lambs their feed. At Maran near Thirsk there is a hen pen to raid for breakfast and a marked route across the organic farmland. At Bwthyn Y Baedd in the Clwydian foothills the farm contact is two resident donkeys who expect carrots. Others are an estate, a ten acre smallholding, a livery yard and an equestrian centre, and two say almost nothing about the farming at all.

For a dog owner the farm brings rules as well as charm. Livestock means leads, and at Jeana's Cottage in the Black Mountains the owners ask that the dog stays on one everywhere outside the garden. So every stay below was picked because its listing describes an enclosed garden, and each block names the limit or catch that matters most: how many dogs, which rooms they can use, what the farm actually keeps. Allowances run from one dog at Jeana's to three at Abercamlais and Totleywells, and eight of the twelve describe a hot tub. What you get, in return for reading the small print, is a garden the dog can be let loose in and fields on the doorstep.

Scotstonrig Cottage, Scottish Borders

Scotstonrig Cottage, a five star period cottage near West Linton in the Scottish Borders with a fully enclosed mature garden

The farming here is done on horseback. Scotstonrig is a detached period cottage on a site with a livery yard and paddocks, and riders can bring a horse of their own, with stabling for one pre-booked directly with the owner. The cottage itself is graded five star and sleeps four, with a wood burner and underfloor heating on the ground floor, French doors from the lounge into a mature garden that is fully enclosed, and a charcoal BBQ for evenings with the two dogs pottering on the lawn.

Dogs are only allowed on the ground floor, so the two bedrooms upstairs are off limits to them. The other thing to know is that the walking starts with a drive: the Pentland Hills are 7 miles away, and the closest route we list, Neidpath Castle and the River Tweed from Peebles, is 7.5 miles. West Linton, a conservation village, is 4.5 miles down the road.

  • Sleeps: 4 across 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Farm: A livery yard and paddocks, with stabling for one horse by arrangement
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, mature and fully enclosed
  • Best for: Riders who would like to bring the horse as well as the dog

Earth Ship, Perthshire

Earth Ship, a single storey quirky house on a working farm above Loch Leven in Perthshire

Of everything here, Earth Ship is the one where the farm comes closest to the front door. The house sits up on a working farm that keeps beef cattle and sheep, looking across Loch Leven, and guests are welcome to help pick the eggs and, in spring, to help feed the lambs. It sleeps seven in three bedrooms, came runner up for Most Iconic Design at the Showcase Awards 2026, and has a private hot tub in its enclosed garden. A Core Path leaves straight from the property, which means mornings with the dogs need no car, and the Loch Leven Heritage Trail is close by.

Dogs are allowed in the open plan lounge and kitchen only. That is where the wood burner and the big dining table are, so they will not feel left out, but bedrooms and wet rooms are closed to them, and the limit is two dogs for a house of seven. The lambs are a spring thing; book in autumn and the farm is cattle, sheep and hens.

  • Sleeps: 7 across 3 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Farm: Beef cattle and sheep, with eggs to collect and lambs to feed in spring
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with the hot tub and seating
  • Best for: Families who want children and dogs to see a farm at work

Abercamlais Estate - Dovecote Cottage, Powys

Dovecote Cottage, a stone cottage on the Grade I listed Abercamlais estate near Brecon in Powys

Dovecote Cottage belongs to Abercamlais, a Grade I listed mansion estate 6 miles west of Brecon, and guests have the run of grounds that include the River Usk, an all weather tennis court and a wild meadow walk. For dogs the estate has something rarer: a paddock where they can come off the lead and run. The stone cottage sleeps six, takes three dogs, and its enclosed garden runs down to a brook, with a charcoal BBQ outside and a wood burner by the lounge sofas for the evening.

The three dog allowance comes with a size condition, as the listing says medium size at most, so owners of big breeds should look elsewhere. This is also an estate first and a farm second; the listing talks about history, wildlife and fly fishing in season rather than livestock. There is no hot tub. The nearest walk on our map is the canal from Brecon Basin to Brynich Aqueduct, 5.1 miles off.

  • Sleeps: 6 across 3 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 3, medium size at most
  • Farm: A Grade I listed estate with a dog paddock and a meadow walk
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, down to a brook
  • Best for: Owners of two or three medium dogs who want off lead space on site

Maran, North Yorkshire

Maran, a converted barn for four on a working organic farm at Sinderby near Thirsk

Maran is a converted barn for four on a working organic farm, set on the village green at Sinderby, and the farm gives guests two things to use: a designated walking route through its land and a hen pen where you can help yourself to eggs. Inside there are stone floors with underfloor heating, which a wet dog will appreciate, a wood burner, a piano in the lounge and two large en suite bedrooms with Juliet balconies. The private hot tub sits on an enclosed patio, and a BBQ can be provided on request.

It is one of four barns on the farm, so expect other guests about. Only the patio is enclosed, though, and a patio will suit two settled dogs far better than two young ones. Beyond the farm route the walking is a drive: the River Skell walk is 6.9 miles away and the edges of the Dales and the North York Moors are within 12 miles. A pub lies within a mile.

  • Sleeps: 4 across 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Farm: Working organic farm, with a hen pen and a walking route across the fields
  • Enclosed garden: An enclosed patio with the hot tub
  • Best for: A couple or small family touring the Dales and the Moors from one base

Bwthyn Y Baedd - Boar Cottage, Flintshire

Bwthyn Y Baedd, a luxury stone cottage on the edge of Lixwm in the Clwydian foothills of Flintshire

Bwthyn Y Baedd is a luxury stone cottage for four on the edge of Lixwm, reached by a private drive, and two resident donkeys live nearby on the working farm; the owners suggest bringing carrots and apples. The enclosed garden looks over the fields and holds a hot tub with robes, a raised dining patio with its gas barbecue, and a covered games den called the Boar Cave with darts, table tennis and basketball. The walking is the best placed of any stay here, with Halkyn Mountain Common only 1.6 miles off, while the village pub sits less than a mile from the drive.

The fire is electric, not a wood burner, which matters if a real fire is part of the picture. The farm side is also gentle, with donkeys to visit rather than a working yard to watch. For a beach, Gronant is 9.2 miles off on the North Wales coast.

  • Sleeps: 4 across 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Farm: Two resident donkeys on the working farm
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with the hot tub, patio and games den
  • Best for: Families with children who want games, donkeys and a hill walk in one weekend

Seaview Steading, Angus

Seaview Steading, a five star cottage near Carmyllie with sea views over the Angus coast

Seaview Steading is a detached five star cottage for four near Carmyllie, with the Angus coastline in view from the living space and a big, enclosed lawned garden beside the house for the dogs. Out on the patio sit a fire pit, a charcoal barbecue and the private hot tub, and indoors the lounge has a roaring wood burner. It has more walking close at hand than most here: Crombie Country Park's loch circuit is 2.7 miles away, and Carnoustie Beach is 5.8 miles.

The honest caveat is that Seaview carries the working farm label without the listing saying anything about the farm itself, so book it for the sea view and the lawn rather than for animals. The lawn is large but the house sleeps only four, and two dogs is the limit.

  • Sleeps: 4 across 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Farm: In the working farm collection, though the listing does not say what is farmed
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, a large lawn
  • Best for: Two couples or a small family who want the coast within reach

The Cider Press - Tirley, Gloucestershire

The Cider Press, a detached barn conversion for two overlooking open countryside at Tirley in Gloucestershire

The Cider Press is the one for couples: a detached barn conversion at Tirley with a single king bedroom set into the eaves, original beams, a contemporary wood burner and countryside views from the open plan ground floor. The owners take two dogs, who get an enclosed garden with seating and its own hot tub. Tewkesbury, with its abbey and the Severn, is 4 miles off, the Cotswolds and the Malvern Hills are both 11 miles away, and a pub can be reached in under a mile.

As at Seaview, the farm is a label in the listing more than a feature of the stay; nothing is said about livestock. It sleeps two and no more. And the nearest walk we list, Upton Country Park and the River Severn, is 7 miles away, though the listing points to peaceful walks in the countryside around the barn.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Farm: In the working farm collection, though the listing gives no farm detail
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with seating and the hot tub
  • Best for: A couple with two dogs and a taste for a quiet rural barn

Braco Farmhouse, Dumfries and Galloway

Braco Farmhouse, a five star period farmhouse for eight on a beef and sheep farm near Dumfries

Braco is the real thing: a detached period farmhouse on a large, family run beef and sheep farm near Dumfries, graded five star and sleeping eight in four bedrooms. A mature garden, enclosed, lies at the front, and on the patio, fully enclosed, a private hot tub looks over the countryside; indoors are a lounge wood burner, a snug with its own TV and a utility room with a door straight outside, which is where muddy dogs should come in.

Eight people share a two dog allowance here. The charcoal BBQ is provided in the summer months only. And although the Solway coast is within reach, the closest dog friendly beach we list, Rockcliffe, is 14.9 miles away; for a walk nearer home, Mabie Forest's Dalshinnie Glen Trail is 5 miles.

  • Sleeps: 8 across 4 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Farm: A large, family run beef and sheep farm
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, a front garden and a patio with the hot tub
  • Best for: A big family who want a proper farmhouse with space to spread out

Coton Park Farm Barn, Shropshire

Coton Park Farm Barn, a detached barn conversion on a ten acre smallholding at Coton near Whitchurch

Coton Park Farm Barn is a detached barn conversion for seven on a ten acre smallholding in the North Shropshire village of Coton. It has been built with a wet dog in mind: a boot room doubling as a utility, plus a drying room, both on the ground floor, stone floors with underfloor heating throughout, and a double height lounge with a wood burner, logs provided. The enclosed garden has a wood fired hot tub, patio dining and a fire pit, and Fenn's and Whixall Mosses are 2.2 miles away, with the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union canal close by too.

This is a smallholding rather than a commercial farm, and the listing says nothing about animals on it, so treat it as a rural barn with land around it. Seven guests share two dogs. Whitchurch is 4 miles away, the local pub is under a mile, and EV charging is on site.

  • Sleeps: 7 across 3 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Farm: A ten acre smallholding
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with a wood fired hot tub and fire pit
  • Best for: A family who will come back muddy and want a drying room waiting

Jeana's Cottage, Monmouthshire

Jeana's Cottage, a detached cottage next to a working farm at Forest Coal Pit in the Black Mountains

Jeana's Cottage is a five star detached cottage beside a working farm at Forest Coal Pit, inside the Brecon Beacons National Park, with the Black Mountains in every direction. Walks and country lane rides start from the door, and Waun Fach and Pen y Gadair Fawr is 2.6 miles away. Inside, the open plan living space has its wood burner, and the ground floor also holds a games room kitted out with pool, darts, a PlayStation and a pinball machine; outside, a wildlife friendly enclosed garden with a terrace and a charcoal barbecue.

This is the strictest stay here. One dog only, kept to the ground floor, and outside the enclosed garden the owners ask that it stays on a lead, because cattle, sheep and horses are all round the farm. That rules out off lead hill days from the door, and it is the right rule on land like this. Crickhowell is 4 miles away and Abergavenny 5.

  • Sleeps: 6 across 3 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 1
  • Farm: Next to a working farm with cattle, sheep and horses
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, wildlife friendly, with a terrace
  • Best for: A family with one steady dog and a list of Black Mountains walks

Totleywells Grange, West Lothian

Totleywells Grange, a five star house for ten within an equestrian centre near Winchburgh in West Lothian

Totleywells Grange is a five star house for ten inside an equestrian centre near Winchburgh, and the biggest place here by some way, with six bedrooms, a sunny games room holding a pool table and its own bar, and a copper topped table that seats everyone. Three dogs are allowed. The large garden is enclosed, a drying room and utility take the wet gear, and from the patio you can watch the horses at practice in the paddocks. Guests with their own horses can arrange stables, turn out and off road hacking.

The animals over the fence are horses, not sheep or cattle, so the question to ask is how your dog behaves around them. The setting is rural but not remote: Edinburgh is 7 miles off and South Queensferry 2.5, with Binny Craig and the Bathgate Hills 3.6 miles away for a hill walk. Three dogs among ten guests is a generous ratio by the standards of this list.

  • Sleeps: 10 across 6 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 3
  • Farm: An equestrian centre with paddocks, stables and off road hacking
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, a large garden with patios over the paddocks
  • Best for: A big group, with horses or without, who want Edinburgh within reach

Maes Yr Hendre, Conwy

Maes Yr Hendre, a five star stone farmhouse for eight at Maenan on the edge of Snowdonia

Maes Yr Hendre is a stone farmhouse for eight at Maenan, where Snowdonia National Park begins, on a working farm with several private walks of its own for guests. It was refurbished in 2019 and keeps its exposed stone, high ceilings and beams, and it is well set up for dogs, with a boot room, a utility and a drying room by the back door, and a wood burner for the dogs to stretch out before. The enclosed garden has a hot tub, sun loungers and views from sunrise to sunset, and a pub lies within a mile of the farm.

Two dogs is the limit across four bedrooms and eight guests. The farm walks are private, but the listing does not describe which fields hold stock, so ask before letting a dog off. Further afield, Llyn Geirionydd is 4.3 miles away and Colwyn Bay Beach 8 miles, with Conwy and Betws y Coed both a short drive.

  • Sleeps: 8 across 4 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Farm: A working farm with private walks for guests
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with the hot tub and sun loungers
  • Best for: A family or group who want farm walks from the door and Snowdonia beyond

Practical Advice for Dog Friendly Stays on a Working Farm

  • Ask what the farm keeps before you go: "working farm" covered beef cattle, sheep, hens, donkeys, horses and nothing stated at all on this list, and the answer decides how much lead work the week involves.
  • Lead up wherever there is stock: Jeana's Cottage makes it a house rule outside the garden, and on any farm walk an unknown field is safest treated the same way, especially in lambing season.
  • Check which rooms the dogs can use: ground floor only at Scotstonrig and Jeana's, lounge and kitchen only at Earth Ship.
  • Count the dogs against the beds: the allowance runs from one to three, and Abercamlais caps size at medium.
  • Pack for mud: Coton Park, Totleywells and Maes Yr Hendre have drying rooms; elsewhere bring old towels for the door.
  • Bringing a horse? Scotstonrig and Totleywells both take one by arrangement with the owner.

Final Thoughts

A farm stay with a dog suits owners whose dog is calm around animals and happy on a lead, and who want the countryside to start at the garden gate. For the full experience, with stock in the fields and jobs to join in, go to Earth Ship, Braco Farmhouse or Maes Yr Hendre. For children, Bwthyn Y Baedd's donkeys and games den are hard to beat.

If your dog needs to run, choose Abercamlais for its paddock, provided it is no bigger than medium. Riders should look at Scotstonrig or Totleywells, couples at The Cider Press, and anyone with a single dog who loves the hills at Jeana's Cottage, as long as they are content to keep that dog on a lead past the garden fence.
