Huts, Lodges and Woodland Cabins: Dog Friendly Glamping Across the UK

Written by Sam Wright

Glamping with a dog is a small-space holiday rather than a roughing-it one. None of the twelve places below involves a tent: they are shepherd's huts, timber lodges and a cluster of woodland cabins, most of them built for two people, with a proper bed, a shower and a kitchen of some kind. What they share is a sense of being outdoors even when you are in. Bodcott has an apple orchard beyond its fence and a sauna of its own, The Tottie Hut sits in a private orchard with horses passing on the far side of the hedge, and The Little Owl Hideaway is a set of cabins in ancient woodland in the Vale of Clwyd.

For a dog owner, the small footprint changes the arithmetic. A hut has less floor for a dog to lie on, so the garden does more of the work, and every stay here was drawn from the Wildpack map on the strength of a listing that describes an enclosed garden. Dog allowances run from one small dog at Bodcott and The Pavilion to three at Hartnolls Lodge and Wooden Hare. Eight of the twelve have a hot tub, four have a wood burner indoors, and they stretch from Grantown-on-Spey to the Hampshire downs, so the dog number and the garden description are the two lines to read first.

Bodcott - Pembridge, Herefordshire

Bodcott, a shepherd's hut for two near Pembridge in Herefordshire with enclosed grounds beside an apple orchard

Bodcott, two miles out of Pembridge on Herefordshire's Black and White Trail, is a two person shepherd's hut, and it is the most complete small compound on this list. Wooden steps climb to stable doors, and inside there is a built in king size bed, a kitchen, a table for two and a shower room at the far end. Across the grounds stand a heated summer house with double doors and a detached sauna, and the fire pit out front is where supper gets cooked on a clear night. Come December the hut is dressed for Christmas.

The limit is the dog. Bodcott accepts one small dog only, a rule the owners put down to the nature of the property, so a Labrador household should look elsewhere. Waymarked trails leave from the door, and for a longer outing on the hill fort, Croft Ambrey and Croft Castle lies 3.7 miles away.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 1 small dog
  • Type: Shepherd's hut, with a summer house and sauna
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with a fire pit and seating
  • Nearest walk: Croft Ambrey and Croft Castle, 3.7 miles
  • Best for: A couple with one small dog who want a sauna after the walk

Hartnolls Lodge Woolacombe, Devon

Hartnolls Lodge, a five star lodge for two in Woolacombe with a decked patio and a private hot tub in an enclosed garden

Hartnolls Lodge is the generous one when it comes to dogs: two people and three dogs is the party it is set up for. The king bedroom has big angled windows, the shower room has a mirror you can play music through, and the open plan lounge gathers round a Smart TV. Sliding doors lead to an enclosed garden with a deck, a lawn, a charcoal BBQ and a private hot tub that is drained and refilled between every stay, with robes and slippers left out.

This is a lodge in a seaside village rather than a hut in a field, so the glamping feel comes from the garden and not the setting. The trade is the coast on the doorstep: Woolacombe Beach is 1.6 miles away, and the Morte Point and Bull Point Circular starts 1.8 miles from the lodge on the South West Coast Path.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 3
  • Type: Cabin lodge
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with decking, lawn and hot tub
  • Nearest walk: Morte Point and Bull Point Circular, 1.8 miles
  • Best for: A couple with three dogs who want the North Devon coast close by

Little Yew Tree Lodge, Hampshire

Little Yew Tree Lodge at Hambledon in Hampshire, a lodge for four with an enclosed garden, pergola and wood fired hot tub

Little Yew Tree Lodge at Hambledon sleeps four, which makes it one of only three places here built for more than a couple plus one. Exposed beams run over an open plan living room with armchairs and a dining table, both bedrooms are en suite, and the king opens through its own patio doors to the garden. That garden is the reason to book: lawn, patio and decking inside an enclosure, a pergola, a fire pit with benches built round it and a hot tub heated by wood, with the logs supplied.

Walking country needs the car from here. The South Downs National Park is 9 miles off, and the Old Winchester Hill and Meon Valley Loop is the nearest walk we list at 4.4 miles. Hambledon Vineyard is 3 miles away, and Hill Head Beach is the closest dog friendly sand at 8.4 miles.

  • Sleeps: 4 in 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Type: Cabin lodge
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with lawn, decking and a fire pit
  • Nearest walk: Old Winchester Hill and Meon Valley Loop, 4.4 miles
  • Best for: Two couples sharing two dogs and a wood fired tub

Summer Lodge, Somerset

Summer Lodge in the Quantock Hills near Nether Stowey, a detached lodge for two with a hot tub under a wooden pagoda

Summer Lodge stands in the Quantocks above Nether Stowey, and its bedroom has floor to ceiling windows looking out over rolling fields towards the Somerset Levels. The super king has an en suite, the lounge is contemporary with a wall mounted TV, and breakfast happens at a bar in the kitchen. Outside there is a lawn for two dogs, a big patio with a BBQ and a hot tub sheltered under a wooden pagoda.

The fire indoors is electric rather than a wood burner, which some will mind on a cold night in the hills. What the lodge has instead is the best walking access in this guide: you can be on Staple Plain within 0.7 miles, Kilve's pebble beach lies 3 miles off, and the sand at Stolford Beach comes 4.3 miles to the east.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Type: Cabin lodge
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with lawn, patio and hot tub
  • Nearest walk: Staple Plain, 0.7 miles
  • Best for: A walking couple with two dogs who want the hills close

Ballinluig Croft, Highlands

Ballinluig Croft, a stone and timber house for eight near Grantown-on-Spey with lawn on every side and a hot tub

Ballinluig Croft needs a confession, though: it is a four bedroom stone and timber house for eight, filed as a lodge, and it is in this guide for the setting more than the size. It sits at the northern tip of the Cairngorms National Park just outside Grantown-on-Spey, with floor to ceiling windows in a high ceilinged living space and a tartan snug behind folding doors where the wood burner lives. A large lawn runs round every side of the house inside the enclosed garden, and there is a hot tub for later.

Eight people sharing two dogs is a thin ratio, and worth knowing too, the house is in a working farm location, so the owners ask that dogs are kept under control at all times. On foot, Anagach Woods and the River Spey is 2.4 miles away, while Nairn East Beach is a 22 mile drive north.

  • Sleeps: 8 in 4 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Type: Stone and timber lodge
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, lawn on all sides
  • Nearest walk: Anagach Woods and the River Spey, 2.4 miles
  • Best for: A family or group with two dogs heading for the Cairngorms

The Tottie Hut, West Lothian

The Tottie Hut, a shepherd's hut in an orchard near South Queensferry with a fenced and hedged enclosed garden

The Tottie Hut is a shepherd's hut in the private orchard of a 60 acre equestrian centre near Winchburgh, with Edinburgh 7 miles away. Its garden is fenced and hedged, with a Weber charcoal barbecue, a bistro set, a fire pit and a wood fired hot tub of its own, and there is a sauna to walk to on the far side of the orchard. Inside, a king size bed, a dining area and a large shower share one open space, and a welcome pack is left for arrival.

Horses are the catch for some dogs. They pass the hedge in the mornings and late afternoons, and guests are asked to keep dogs in the enclosed garden and on a lead near the paddocks, so a horse-mad terrier may spend the stay at the fence. Shetland ponies on site can be groomed, and South Queensferry, 2 miles off, has the Fife Coastal Path, and Aberdour Silver Sands is 7.8 miles away across the Forth.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Type: Shepherd's hut
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, fenced and hedged
  • Nearest walk: Binny Craig and Bathgate Hills Circular, 3.7 miles
  • Best for: A couple combining a hut weekend with a day in Edinburgh

The Cormorant, Fife

The Cormorant, a detached lodge near Anstruther in the East Neuk of Fife with sea views and a fully enclosed patio

The Cormorant looks over the Firth of Forth from the East Neuk, and a picture window in the hallway puts the sea in front of you before the bags are down. The lounge pairs a wood burner with big patio doors, and both super king rooms can split into twins, each with an en suite warmed by underfloor heating. The fully enclosed patio holds a private hot tub, a charcoal BBQ and a covered deck strung with star lights.

Only one dog is allowed, though the lodge sleeps four, so two couples will have to agree whose dog comes. The garden is a patio rather than a lawn, which suits a dog who is happy to lie on the boards more than one who wants to run. Anstruther and its harbour are close, the beach is 2 miles away, and the Kingsbarns to Crail Coastal Walk is 3.9 miles up the coast.

  • Sleeps: 4 in 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 1
  • Type: Cabin lodge
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, a fully enclosed patio
  • Nearest walk: Kingsbarns to Crail Coastal Walk, 3.9 miles
  • Best for: A sea view and a hot tub for a household with one dog

The Pavilion, Lincolnshire

The Pavilion, a single storey lodge for two at Swaton in Lincolnshire with a veranda and a large enclosed garden

The Pavilion is the plain choice, and that is its appeal. It is a single storey lodge for two in Swaton, out in the flat farmland of south Lincolnshire, with a veranda that faces the setting sun and a large garden enclosed all the way round. A boot room by the door catches muddy boots and wet leads, and a dog welcome pack and drying room are listed among its facilities. The bed is a super king that unzips into two singles.

There is no hot tub and no wood burner, and the dog allowance is one small dog. Footpaths leave the door across the fields, but the nearest walk we list, the Slea Valley Walk at Sleaford, is 5.9 miles away, and the deer park at Belton House needs the car too.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 1 small dog
  • Type: Cabin lodge, single storey
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, large and enclosed all round
  • Nearest walk: Slea Valley Walk, Sleaford, 5.9 miles
  • Best for: A quiet, level week for a couple and a small dog

Wooden Hare, North Yorkshire

Wooden Hare, a single storey lodge at Finghall above Wensleydale with a decked veranda and an enclosed lawn

Wooden Hare sits high at Finghall, looking over the pastures of Wensleydale, and the Wensleydale Railway runs below it, close enough that the steam trains stop conversation on the deck. It is all on one level: an open plan kitchen, lounge and dining room, a super king with its own TV and a single with a trundle underneath. Dinner is eaten on a table that converts for snooker and later for ping pong, and there is a hot tub on the decked veranda behind glass balustrades.

The fire is a flame effect bioethanol one, so expect a glow rather than the smell of logs. Shetland ponies graze the paddock beyond the enclosed lawn, which will hold some dogs' attention for the whole week. A pub is 200 metres away, and a 3.5 mile drive reaches Middleham Castle and River Cover Loop, a circuit for a longer day.

  • Sleeps: 3 in 2 bedrooms
  • Dogs welcome: 3
  • Type: Cabin lodge, single storey
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, a lawn plus a decked veranda
  • Nearest walk: Middleham Castle and River Cover Loop, 3.5 miles
  • Best for: Three dogs and a small party who like a game after dinner

The Alpaca Retreat, Buckinghamshire

The Alpaca Retreat, a hand crafted shepherd hut near Ludgershall overlooking a pond in three acres of gardens

The Alpaca Retreat is a hand crafted shepherd hut near Ludgershall, overlooking a pond in three acres of gardens, with the alpacas that name it living in the next field. Inside, the double bed is curtained off at one end, and the open plan room has a wood burner for the evenings. French doors lead on to private decking with an outdoor kitchen: a barbecue, a steak searing station and a beer and wine fridge, plus a pizza oven, a BBQ hut, a fire pit, croquet on the lawn and a private hot tub.

Two cautions for dog owners, though. The hot tub is an inflatable one rather than a built in tub, and a gentle stream with no fence borders the land, so a water-loving dog needs watching beyond the enclosed garden. The village pub is walkable, and Bernwood Forest and Oakley Wood is 1.8 miles away.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Type: Shepherd's hut
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with a fire pit
  • Nearest walk: Bernwood Forest and Oakley Wood, 1.8 miles
  • Best for: A couple who cook outdoors, with two dogs and Oxford in reach

The Little Owl Hideaway, Denbighshire

The Little Owl Hideaway, a set of cabins for two in ancient woodland at Llanrhaeadr in the Vale of Clwyd

The Little Owl Hideaway is the most dog-minded place in the guide. It is a set of small cabins in ancient woodland at Llanrhaeadr, and the owner has tested the fencing and found it secure for dogs of every size; it is designed as a calm place for reactive dogs as well. One cabin is a studio with a double bed, another is a kitchen and diner opening on to a deck with a log burner and charcoal BBQ, and a secret path leads through a second gate to a larger woodland garden with views to the Clwydian range.

Being spread across cabins does mean a trade. The shower is in a cabin of its own and the WC is an eco one, so a night trip means going outside. In return, walks begin at the doorstep, a path from the gate leads to a Roman bath where cold water swimming is allowed, and the village has a 400 year old pub.

  • Sleeps: 2 in 1 bedroom
  • Dogs welcome: 2
  • Type: Shepherd's hut and woodland cabins
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, with fencing tested for all sizes
  • Nearest walk: Foel Fenlli from Bwlch Pen Barras, 5.4 miles
  • Best for: A couple with a reactive dog who need a quiet, secure base

Lighthouse View Lodge, Norfolk

Lighthouse View Lodge at Happisburgh on the Norfolk coast, with views across the fields to the lighthouse

Lighthouse View Lodge earns its name from the dining table, where Happisburgh's lighthouse stands across the open fields. A long, wide hall takes coats, boots and the washing machine before you reach the lounge and diner with its wood burner, and there is a double, a second room with a single for a third guest on request, and a shower room. Walks start at the back of the property.

The enclosed garden is small, an area by the entrance rather than a lawn to run on, and the lodge takes one dog and no guests under 18. The upside is the sea: Happisburgh Beach is 0.4 miles away, the closest beach to any stay in this guide, and Cromer and the Broads at Wroxham are both within an easy drive.

  • Sleeps: 2, plus 1 on request
  • Dogs welcome: 1
  • Type: Cabin lodge
  • Enclosed garden: Yes, a small area by the entrance
  • Nearest walk: Weaver's Way: North Walsham to Stalham, 5.4 miles
  • Best for: Adults with one dog who want a beach within walking distance

Practical Advice for Booking Dog Friendly Glamping

A hut or lodge packs everything into a few square metres, so the details that a big cottage absorbs show up fast. Before booking, look at:

  • Size rules as well as numbers. Bodcott and The Pavilion each take one small dog, and the listing is explicit about it.
  • What sits beyond the fence. The Alpaca Retreat has an unfenced stream at the boundary, The Tottie Hut has horses on the other side of the hedge, and Wooden Hare has ponies in the paddock.
  • Where the bathroom is. At The Little Owl Hideaway the shower and WC are in separate cabins from the bed.
  • What kind of heat. Summer Lodge has an electric fire and Wooden Hare a bioethanol one, while The Alpaca Retreat, The Cormorant, Ballinluig Croft and Lighthouse View Lodge have wood burners.
  • Garden or patio. The Cormorant's enclosure is a patio and Lighthouse View's is a small area by the door; both are secure, neither is a field.
  • Keep dogs out of the hot tub. Chlorinated water is no good for their eyes or skin, and claws can puncture an inflatable shell.

Map of Dog Friendly Glamping in the UK

Plotted together, the twelve sit in three loose groups: a Scottish trio running from the Spey down to the Forth, a middle band from Wensleydale through Lincolnshire to the Vale of Clwyd and Herefordshire, and a southern scatter from Woolacombe to Hambledon, with Happisburgh alone on the Norfolk coast. Open the Wildpack map and the nearest trails and dog friendly sand appear around each hut or lodge you pick.

Final Thoughts

Dog friendly glamping suits couples more than anyone else. Nine of these twelve sleep two or three, and the best of them, The Tottie Hut, Bodcott and The Little Owl Hideaway, feel like somewhere you would not find on your own. They reward owners who want to spend the evening outside with the dog and are happy to give up a second sofa for a fire pit and a fence.

Pick by the dog first. Three dogs points to Hartnolls Lodge or Wooden Hare, a reactive dog to The Little Owl Hideaway, and one small dog to Bodcott for the sauna or The Pavilion for the peace. Walkers should take Summer Lodge for the Quantocks, beach people Lighthouse View Lodge, and anyone bringing more than one other couple will need Little Yew Tree Lodge or Ballinluig Croft.
