Headlam, County Durham
Yes. Dogs can stay in selected rooms, up to 2 dogs per room.
A family owned 17th-century country house near Darlington, with spa and golf, where dogs stay at no charge and dine in the Library Bar if you tell reception.
The hamlet of Headlam, at the foot of the Durham Dales, is home to Headlam Hall: a family owned 17th-century country house standing in walled gardens and surrounded by its own rolling farmland. The family who run it have dogs of their own, often seen around the hotel and the village, and their dog friendly hotel with spa and golf asks nothing extra for bringing your dog.
The Mews rooms are very well suited to dogs: ground floor rooms in a pretty stone building set back along the drive, with direct access outside, benches to sit out on and space for up to two dogs. A selection of Main Hall, Coach House and Spa bedrooms can take one smaller dog, so call reception about those. Every canine guest is given a bowl, treats and a welcome letter, and mucky pups can be hosed down outside, with towels on request.
Dogs are welcome in the Brasserie, the Main Hall lounge and the bar, as long as they are clean and on a lead, and you can dine with yours in the Library Bar at breakfast, lunch or dinner if you let reception know. The kitchens cook modern British food with produce from the Hall's own kitchen garden, and the Spa Brasserie has panoramic views over the golf course and a terrace with outside seating.
The spa has an indoor pool, a sauna and a steam room, and outside there is a nine-hole golf course and a tennis court. Dog walks begin at the end of the drive: the village green, a few yards from the Mews rooms, is where the hotel suggests you exercise your dog off its lead; in the hotel gardens dogs stay on one, and public footpaths lead out from the village.
