1 / 8The Bull & Swan
Stamford, Lincolnshire
Yes. Dogs can stay in selected rooms, up to 2 dogs per room.
A late 17th century Stamford inn on the Burghley Estate, with a bed, bowls and a special treat for each dog, who may join you in the pub.
In the shadow of Burghley House, the Bull & Swan dates back to the late 17th century and once served as unofficial headquarters for The Honourable Order of Little Bedlam, a drinking club founded in 1684 whose members took animal nicknames. Some of their portraits still hang in the pub, and the nine bedrooms carry their names. Real ales, gastro food and a kitchen garden make it a dog friendly inn where town meets country.
A limited number of rooms are set aside for dogs, two dogs at most in each, and every dog finds a comfortable bed, bowls and a special treat waiting. Porcupine, one of them, is on the ground floor, a short walk past the Kitchen Garden, with historic artwork and a large walk-in shower; Wildhorse sits above the inn's archway where horses would have been tethered. Dogs stay on a lead in all public areas and mustn't be left unattended in your room, and if yours needs a wash after a muddy outing, have a word with the team rather than using the bedroom bathroom.
Dogs are welcome beside you in the pub, the Potting Shed and the garden, so you can settle in for a pint and traditional pub charm or book a table out in the Potting Shed. The food is comfortingly traditional, the ale is real, and the kitchen garden is planted to inspire the chefs.
The bedrooms all have Bramley toiletries, a Roberts radio, a Nespresso machine and homemade treats. When your dog is ready to stretch its legs, Wildpack has Burghley House and the River Welland Walk 1.1 miles from the inn, and the reception team will gladly suggest more walks nearby.
