1 / 8The Coat & Bear
Newbury, West Berkshire
Yes. Dogs can stay overnight, up to 2 dogs per room.
A Georgian pub with 26 rooms in the middle of Newbury, where dogs get a dog menu, a bed on request and a wash in the courtyard.
The Coat & Bear is a Georgian building with a listed frontage on Bartholomew Street, in the middle of Newbury, split between a pub on one side and 26 bedrooms on the other. The pub half is where a dog friendly inn shows itself: dogs are welcome through much of it, and there are water bowls and free treats whenever you ask.
Dogs take the bedrooms too, though the hotel doesn't say which ones, so ask when you book. A cosy dog bed comes on request and fits two medium sized dogs, with two dogs the limit to a room. Paws on floors is the house rule: dogs stay on the floor rather than the furniture. The inn does not mention leaving a dog alone in a bedroom.
The dog menu, put together with Sir Woofchester, runs from treat pots to dinner bowls and alcohol free dog drinks, and dedicated dog friendly dining areas mean your dog sits with you while you eat. The pub cooks gastropub food, with a floating island bar at the centre of the dining space.
Breakfast is a continental course and a hot dish from the menu, and the rooms run up to a Grand Room. The pub takes its name from the Newbury Coat of 1811 and from Paddington Bear, whose creator was born in the town. Newbury is set up for walking with a dog, and the team knows the local favourites. Of our own walks, Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre and Greenham Common and the Control Tower are both 2.3 miles away.
