1 / 8The Fat Lamb Country Inn
Ravenstonedale, Westmorland and Furness
Yes. Dogs can stay overnight.
A former coaching inn between Sedbergh and Kirkby Stephen, with its own nature reserve behind it and an open fire in the bar where dogs are welcome.
Some 350 years after it began taking in travellers on the road from Sedbergh to Kirkby Stephen, the Fat Lamb Country Inn is a 4 star inn in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, just south of Ravenstonedale, with the Dales on one side and the Howgills on the other. This dog friendly inn welcomes owners with amicable, well behaved dogs. It has its own private nature reserve at the rear, though the inn doesn't say whether dogs can use it.
Let the inn know at the time of booking that a dog is coming, so it can make the necessary preparations, and bring dog bedding to protect the carpets and soft furnishings and keep your dog off the beds. Dogs are not to be left unattended in the bedrooms. Which of the 12 bedrooms take dogs, and how many can share one, the inn doesn't say, so ask as you book.
Dogs are allowed in the public bar, kept under close control, on a lead if needed, but not in the restaurant. Many prefer it that way, since the open fire is in the bar. Owners often order from the extensive menu and sit in the bar with their dog close by. Everything is cooked on the premises by the inn's own chefs, with fresh, locally sourced produce an important part of the menu: generous portions of old fashioned home cooking, with homemade sweets, hot puddings and local cheeses to finish.
Five of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, with level access through to the bar and restaurant. The inn wouldn't want any dog owner to enjoy the Howgills, the Dales and the Lake District without their companion, and Wildpack lists Cautley Spout from the Cross Keys and Smardale Gill Viaduct and Nature Reserve, each 4.1 miles away.
