The Queens Head, Troutbeck

Troutbeck, Westmorland and Furness

Yes. Dogs can stay in most rooms, up to 2 dogs per room.

A 17th century coaching inn on the fellside above the Troutbeck Valley, where dogs get a welcome pack and a menu of their own in the bar.

Up on the side of the fells that look over the Troutbeck Valley, The Queens Head is a 17th century coaching inn that has been welcoming locals and visitors for hundreds of years. It is a dog friendly inn at heart: muddy boots and paws are welcome together, the house beer is named after a dog, and roaring fires wait to warm two feet and four paws at the end of a walk.

Most of the ten rooms take dogs, up to two in each, and the dog rooms come with a welcome pack of a bed, a towel and a bowl, plus slip leads on request if you've left yours at home. Bowfell, a superior double with great views across the countryside, takes dogs; Great Gable is one room where they aren't allowed. Wherever you are in the inn, dogs can't be left unattended without someone with them.

In the bar, the inn serves dogs home-cooked meals designed just for them and Sir Woof Chester, a tasty treat for dogs. For tables elsewhere with your dog, the inn doesn't say, so ask about dinner when you book. The kitchen sources local produce where it can, and the menu runs from pub favourites and Lakeland classics to a Sunday roast at the weekend.

Off the main pub area, the Mayor's Room, with the old Mayor's chair still in position, has been bringing people together for centuries, and outside there is a spacious patio for a meal or a drink in the fresh air. Two of Wildpack's walks are close by for the dog: Wansfell Pike (Ambleside) at 1.3 miles and the Kentmere Horseshoe Circular Walk at 2.6 miles.

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10

Good open fell walking and off-lead potential on the upper sections, but sheep on the Troutbeck descent and steep rocky ground make this less straightforward than the rating might suggest.

Loughrigg Fell (Ambleside)

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10

Open fell, a tarn for swimming and good off-lead potential across the upper sections make this a strong choice; loses a point for boggy ground and enclosed farmland on the lower approaches.

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10

Varied and scenic with good water access, but livestock near Rydal and busy paths in summer mean leads are needed regularly.
