Bitt Cottage is a converted Wesleyan chapel in Santon Bridge, at the mouth of the majestic Wasdale valley, thoughtfully refurbished, deceptively spacious and blessed with glorious views across open countryside. Four guests and three dogs have this dog friendly chapel to themselves, and its large garden is securely fenced at 1.2m, so the dogs can run free without anybody worrying about their safety.
Guests come in through a large, light porch with a utility cupboard and bags of space for coats and muddy boots. Beyond it the living room is roomy and elegant, with two windows looking across rolling fields to Muncaster Fell and two large sofas arranged round the open fire, which the dogs will find long before anyone has unpacked. The kitchen diner is light and dual aspect, the double has the garden for its outlook, and the twin opens off the living room.
Out through the back porch, with more room for boots, the garden is surrounded by mature trees and hedges, with a lawn to the rear and a large lawn to the side set with dining furniture. It catches the afternoon and evening light, and wine on the side lawn while three dogs race round it is how most days here finish, with tomorrow's fell being argued over.
The crystal clear River Irt runs through the village, with paddling aplenty, and Wast Water is 4 miles away. Scafell Pike is within easy reach for a big day with the dogs and Irton Pike for a gentler one, the La'al Ratty steam railway runs down Eskdale to the coast, and Ravenglass, less than 5 miles off, has Muncaster Castle on its edge and a coastal path through the dunes to Drigg or Seascale.
