Blue House was built in 1782 and looks straight onto the village green at Elsdon, a picture postcard village in the Northumberland hills. A double fronted stone house for seven, it has been given a thorough makeover and is a dog friendly base for a family, taking one dog.

The garden is the thing to see. It is large, lawned and enclosed, with furniture, and it faces west, so the evening sun lands on it last. There is room for a dog to run and for children to play at the same time, and a table outside for supper while the light goes over the hills.

Indoors, everything turns towards an inglenook fireplace with a wood burner, and that hearth is where the dog will be found by eight o'clock. There is a second sitting room, used as a dining room, with an electric stove, a contemporary kitchen at the back, a utility room and a shower room, all on the ground floor. Upstairs are three king bedrooms, a room with a single and a child's bed, and a family bathroom.

Elsdon lies in Redesdale, in wide open hill country where sheep graze the fells and a dog needs its lead on the moor. The Simonside Hills are close, with the rock carvings at Lordenshaws, and to the north Coquetdale leads up to Harbottle Crags and the Drake Stone. Hareshaw Linn, a wooded gorge ending in a waterfall, is near Bellingham to the west.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Blue House dog friendly?

Yes, Blue House welcomes dogs — one dog is accepted at this property. The large, enclosed lawned garden gives your dog plenty of room to roam, and by evening they'll likely be found curled up by the inglenook wood burner along with everyone else.

  • Are dogs allowed at Blue House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given the wood burner and enclosed garden, it feels well set up for dogs at any time of year.

  • What should I know before visiting Blue House with my dog?

Blue House accepts one dog, so it's best suited to single-dog households or groups bringing just the one. The garden is enclosed and lawned, which is great for off-lead time at the house, but do be aware that the surrounding hill country is sheep-grazing land, so a lead is needed out on the moor. The Simonside Hills, Coquetdale and Hareshaw Linn are all within reach for walks, with some wonderful varied terrain to explore.
