Bull Close Cottage is a stone terrace in the hamlet of Skelwith Fold, four people and two dogs in it, with a small enclosed garden at the front and a wood burner at the centre of the living room. Skelwith Fold is a handful of houses and a lane and nothing else, which leaves a dog friendly week here with very little around it to have opinions about.
The living room takes a step up on the way in, low beams over it, and a book nook in the corner holding a rocking chair. The kitchen is generous for a cottage this size and the dining room beside it seats four. Above are a wood panelled double looking out at the hills and a twin next to the shower room. The burner is where both dogs end up, and they stay there.
Nine in the evening and the burner has been going since five. One dog is in the book nook, which was nobody's plan, and the other has taken the hearth. Boots stand drying by the door after Loughrigg. Somebody is reading in the rocking chair with a dog's head across their foot, and nothing has been proposed for tomorrow that is further than an hour's walk from this room.
Ambleside is the town, independent shops, two small cinemas and plenty to eat, and the fells begin where the streets give out. Loughrigg rises straight behind the hamlet with a tarn on its flank and a top small enough for an evening. West, a river path runs to Elterwater and on into the Langdales. North lie Rydal Water and Grasmere, both circled on the level, which is what an older dog wants.
