Book now

Cae Haidd Retreat was a proud third place winner in the Canine Collection category at the Showcase Awards 2026, and three dogs are welcome to find out why. This elegant, dog friendly barn conversion sits on a smallholding with pigs, sheep and chickens in the tranquil village of Bwlchgwyn, between Ruthin and Wrexham, with countryside views and peace and privacy all round.

Inside it is a stylish, cosy barn. Logs for the wood burner's first evening are included, the Smart TV has Netflix for the nights in, and there is ample space in the kitchen for your dog's crate, beside the coffee machine and dishwasher, so a crate trained dog has its own corner from the first evening. Its two bedrooms, one double and one twin, sit alongside a shower room.

The smallholding brings its own pleasures. There are eggs, sausages and bacon from the farm when available, a charcoal BBQ for an evening outside, and pigs, sheep and chickens that three dogs will find endlessly interesting. Bikes and kit for a day in the forest lock away in the shed.

That forest is Coed Llandegla, 3.5 miles away, and the barn comes with a complimentary parking pass for One Planet Adventure there, ideal for cycling, running and dog walking. Ty Mawr and the other local country parks are worth a visit, the Clwydian Range is there for a scenic walk, and the climb up Moel Famau, its highest peak, on the Offa's Dyke Trail is a fine challenge for a fit dog and its people. Wrexham, home to Wrexham AFC, is 5 miles away.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Cae Haidd Retreat dog friendly?

Yes, very much so. The cottage welcomes up to three dogs and has been set up with them in mind — there's dedicated space for a dog crate in the kitchen, an enclosed garden for safe outdoor time, and direct access to open ground beyond the property without needing to cross a road. By all accounts, the wood burner in the lounge becomes a firm favourite with the dogs by evening.

  • Are dogs allowed at Cae Haidd Retreat year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so there's nothing to suggest they aren't welcome throughout the year. Given the wood burner, the enclosed garden and the working smallholding setting, it feels like a place that suits a dog-friendly visit in any season.

  • What should I know before visiting Cae Haidd Retreat with my dog?

The property sits on a working smallholding with livestock around, so dogs need to be kept to the enclosed garden until they're on a lead — the garden is there specifically for that reason. The cottage itself has a few level changes inside (steps down from the patio and between rooms), which is worth bearing in mind for older or less agile dogs. Once clipped on, you can head straight out onto open moorland, forestry and the wooded Nant y Ffrith valley without touching a road.
