Erddig Parkland Walk
Wrexham
Erddig's 1,200 acre parkland was landscaped from 1768 by William Emes, who planted veteran oaks, sycamores and sweet chestnuts and diverted the Afon Clywedog through cascades and weirs. Dogs are kept on a lead across most of the parkland, where livestock graze year round, but a signed off lead area near Felin Puleston lets them run free. The most unusual survivor is the Cup and Saucer, a stone basin with a waterfall at its centre, though the embankment is cordoned off for safety. Waymarked routes cross the grassland, woodland and riverside, taking in a Norman motte and bailey castle and the escarpment towards Wat's Dyke. A full circuit of the main paths covers around 6km with some climbing, and maps are available at the entrance.
Erddig is a National Trust two pawprint dog friendly site, and dogs are welcome throughout the wider estate on a lead, plus the walled garden itself if kept to the paths on a short, non-extendable lead. The parkland carries grazing livestock year round, so a lead is required for most of the walk, but a designated off-lead area near the Felin Puleston Countryside Centre lets a dog run free. The rivers and more than 30 ponds give plenty of chances to drink or paddle, and the mature tree cover offers good shade. Woof's Den, a free dog agility area in Big Wood, is a nice extra stop. A water point for dogs is in the Stable Yard, and the Parlour cafe welcomes dogs, though the Hayloft Restaurant, shop and Hall do not.

Is Erddig Parkland Walk dog friendly?
Erddig is a National Trust two-pawprint dog friendly site, and dogs are welcome throughout the parkland, the wider estate and even the walled garden (on a short, non-extendable lead and kept to the paths). It scores 8 out of 10 on our dog friendly rating, and there are some genuinely good extras for dogs, including a free agility area called Woof's Den in Big Wood, a dog water point in the Stable Yard, and a welcome at the Parlour café.
Can dogs be off lead at Erddig Parkland Walk?
Dogs need to be on a lead for most of the walk because the parkland carries grazing livestock year round. There is, however, a signed off-lead area near the Felin Puleston Countryside Centre where your dog can have a proper run around.
What should I know before visiting Erddig Parkland Walk with my dog?
Bring a lead — the parkland has livestock grazing throughout the year, so it's required for the majority of the 6km circuit. The Parlour café welcomes dogs, but the Hayloft Restaurant, the shop and the Hall do not, so it's worth planning your refreshment stop accordingly. On the plus side, the estate has more than 30 ponds and river access for paddling and drinking, and a dog water point is available in the Stable Yard. Parking is pay and display, free for National Trust members.
