The Lion at Malpas

Malpas, Cheshire West and Chester

Yes. Dogs can stay in selected rooms, up to 2 dogs per room.

A village inn in Malpas, Cheshire, with 16 new rooms, several of them for well behaved dogs, and a 17th century Tudor Cottage that takes two dogs.

The Lion, named Best Inn at the 2026 Great British Pub Awards, has been a central part of village life in Malpas for over three centuries, in the south west tip of Cheshire close to the borders with Shropshire and Wales. Recent renovations have added 16 new bedrooms at this dog friendly inn.

Several rooms are open to well behaved dogs, with a ceiling of two per room, and the Tudor Cottage takes up to two dogs as well. The cottage dates back to the early 17th century and sleeps up to eight, with a spacious living area and log burner, a separate snug with a second log burner and a record player, two king-size bedrooms and a twin, and a kitchenette, plus a full hot and continental breakfast each morning. In the inn, the new rooms are made with beautiful fabrics and reclaimed timbers, with fluffy pillows and toiletries from the Bath House, Sedbergh.

The cooking is British, from pub classics to more inventive dishes, built on close relationships with local farms and producers: a three-course meal in the relaxed dining area, a casual bite in the cosy snug or a glass of your favourite tipple at the well-stocked bar. With a dog in tow, the inn doesn't say where among them you can settle, so check before reserving.

The Lion also has the Brereton Suite, a self-contained event space, and a small number of additional beds are available for children under 12. Two of Wildpack's walks are within easy reach for the dog: Bickerton Hill, Maiden Castle and Raw Head at 3.8 miles, and Whitchurch Waterways Country Park at 4.9 miles.
