Beeston is a climb with a serious payoff. The castle sits on a rocky crag above the Cheshire Plain, and from the top the view runs across eight counties, as far as the Welsh mountains on a clear day. Inside the ruins is England's deepest castle well, long rumoured to hold Richard II's lost treasure, and the Castle of the Rock exhibition covers 4,000 years of the place.

As you make your way up to the gatehouse and the summit, stopping at the reconstructed Bronze Age roundhouse on the way, your dog gets the woodland park that makes this site rate so highly. You get a proper wooded circuit with real climb, leaf litter and shade before you ever reach the castle, so it functions as a walk rather than a look round.
