Whitegate Way: Winsford to Cuddington
Cheshire
The Whitegate Way follows the trackbed of a Victorian salt railway that ran from Winsford to Cuddington along the River Weaver, opened in 1870 and closed to freight in 1966. There's no livestock on this level, crushed stone trail, so a dog can range freely through the wooded cuttings and open embankments. This point to point route covers the full six miles, ten kilometres, between Whitegate Station and Cuddington on a level, firm surface with no stiles or gates, passing through shaded wooded cuttings and open embankments with wide views across the Cheshire countryside. Two hollows beside the path, Sixes Hole and Marton Hole, mark where the ground subsided into old brine workings, and both are good for winter wildfowl including tufted duck and little grebe. Walking the whole distance takes around ninety minutes, though shorter circular loops link off the Way for those who would rather not arrange transport at the far end.
This is an excellent dog friendly walk: flat, barrier-free and away from traffic and livestock for its whole length, with wide, well-drained paths that give a dog plenty of room to explore. There's no water directly on the path, though the old subsidence pools can be reached with care in places, and dogs enjoy plenty of scent from the summer wildflowers along the verges. Cyclists and horse riders share the route, so keep dogs under control when passing them. Free parking and accessible toilets are at Whitegate Station, where the old station building serves as a cafe, a good place to start and finish.
