Anderton Nature Park and the Boat Lift
Cheshire
The Anderton Boat Lift, built in 1875 to raise and lower boats 50 feet between the River Weaver Navigation and the Trent and Mersey Canal, is one of the great structures of the English canal network and is often called the Cathedral of the Canals. There's no livestock along the route, so a dog can enjoy the flat towpath and woodland trails with few restrictions. This 3.3 kilometre circular walk from the visitor centre follows the canal towpath and riverside paths on level, easy going, with the chance to watch boats using the lift itself. The route continues south east into Anderton Nature Park, a former industrial site now planted with woodland trails and ponds, where a waymarked wildflower trail crosses reclaimed ground above the Weaver valley. The whole walk is flat and well surfaced throughout.
This dog friendly walk suits dogs of any age thanks to the level towpath and woodland paths, though the canal and the boat lift basin have unfenced drops in places, so dogs should be kept close on a lead along the water's edge. Once in Anderton Nature Park the paths move away from open water into woodland, giving more relaxed off-lead potential for a dog with reasonable recall. There's no livestock anywhere on the route. The Canal and River Trust visitor centre has a cafe with outdoor seating, and toilets are on site. Parking is pay and display at the boat lift's own car park on Lift Lane.

All dog friendly stays in CheshireFrequently Asked Questions
Is Anderton Nature Park and the Boat Lift dog friendly?
Yes, this is a solid choice for a dog walk, earning a 7 out of 10 on our dog friendly rating. The 3.3 kilometre circular route is entirely flat and well surfaced, there's no livestock anywhere along the way, and the Canal and River Trust visitor centre has a cafe with outdoor seating where you can stop for a break with your dog.
Can dogs be off lead at Anderton Nature Park and the Boat Lift?
It depends on where you are on the route. Along the canal towpath and around the boat lift basin there are unfenced drops to the water, so keeping your dog on a lead in those sections is the sensible call. Once you're into Anderton Nature Park itself, the paths move away from open water into woodland, which gives dogs with reliable recall a more relaxed opportunity to run free.
What should I know before visiting Anderton Nature Park and the Boat Lift with my dog?
The main thing to be aware of is the unfenced water's edge near the boat lift and along parts of the canal towpath, so a lead is important in those spots. On the plus side, there's no livestock anywhere on the route, the terrain is flat throughout making it suitable for dogs of any age, and parking is available at the pay and display car park on Lift Lane.
