Marbury Country Park and Budworth Mere
Cheshire
Marbury Country Park occupies the grounds of the former Marbury Hall estate on the shore of Budworth Mere, near Northwich in Cheshire. With no livestock on site, a dog can enjoy the old estate rides and lime avenues largely off the lead. Lime avenues and a mature arboretum planted for the hall survive as the park's backbone, and the 3 kilometre waymarked route follows good, firm paths with almost no gradient past the mere, through woodland and along the old estate rides. Spring brings lesser celandine, wood anemone and bluebells to the woodland floor, with wild garlic scenting the air as the canopy closes overhead. A bird hide looks out over the mere towards the church at Great Budworth on the far shore. The walk takes around an hour to an hour and a half at an easy pace.
This is a very dog friendly walk, with high off-lead potential thanks to the flat, well-used paths and no livestock anywhere on site. There's plenty of woodland scent for a dog to work through, and the old lime avenues give shade on hot days. Budworth Mere itself is best left to the wildfowl that gather near the bird hide, so keep dogs on the path rather than at the water's edge here. The going is level and firm throughout, suitable for dogs of any age or fitness. Parking is pay and display at the main car park off Marbury Road, with toilets near the Rangers' Office and a refreshment van in the picnic area at weekends.
