1 / 11Llantysilio Lodge
Llangollen, Denbighshire
The Grade II listed lodge to Llantysilio Hall, outside Llangollen, sleeping five with one dog welcome, two wood burners and enclosed lawned gardens at the rear and side.
Every big house had a lodge at its gate, and this is the one that belonged to Llantysilio Hall, in the Dee valley just upstream of Llangollen. It is Grade II listed, detached, and now a dog friendly lodge for five people and one dog, with enclosed gardens wrapping round the rear and the side.
Both gardens are lawn, enclosed, with a patio at the back, a sitting out area and a children's play area, so the dog has ground on two sides of the house and the children have somewhere to be while the kettle boils. There are two steps up to the door. Inside, the living room has a remote controlled electric wood burner, and the kitchen, which has its own real wood burner and a breakfast area, is where the day tends to start and end. Logs to begin with and doggy extras are both waiting.
Upstairs, a super king bedroom, a twin and a single make it a comfortable fit for a family, with a shower room downstairs and a utility room for muddy towels. The evenings here are quiet: one dog asleep in front of the kitchen stove, the children upstairs, and the old lodge doing what it was built for, keeping watch at the edge of the estate.
The Horseshoe Falls, where Telford's weir feeds the Llangollen Canal, are close by, and the towpath runs from there into town, level and easy with a dog, with the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey a short detour off it. Further down the canal the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries it high over the Dee, and the steam trains of the Llangollen Railway run up the valley from the town station.
