Dogs are allowed downstairs here and not upstairs. The owners say so plainly, which helps, because an animal sleeping on the ground floor by prior arrangement is one nobody negotiates with at eleven at night. Canal Cottage takes four people at Rye, dog friendly, fully enclosed garden behind, a single dog allowed. The rivers meet below the town.

One king bedroom, one twin, a bathroom with its own separate WC beside it, and storage for bicycles, worth having in a town built up a hill. Out at the back the enclosure is complete and there is seating on the patio. Because the dog's territory is the ground floor and that garden, the two run together as one space, which means a door left open rather than a route anybody thinks about.

It suits four people with a dog who would rather be inside Rye than looking at it from a field. The sea is a drive instead of a walk, which is the trade being made. What comes back the other way is a town worth returning to, where a dog gets pavements with things happening on them and cobbles that are hard work in both directions.

Three rivers arrive at Rye and leave as one. The Rother, the Brede and the Tillingham come off the levels, meet below the cliff the town stands on, and go out to sea together past the harbour. A path runs the bank most of the way and it is dead level, which after the gradients of the streets is the point. Past the water the marsh goes on flat in every direction, and one dog can be walked into it until somebody decides to turn round.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Canal Cottage - Rye dog friendly?

Yes, Canal Cottage welcomes one dog. The cottage has a fully enclosed garden at the back, and dogs have the run of the ground floor and that outdoor space together — the two areas work as one, which makes life straightforward in practice.

  • Are dogs allowed at Canal Cottage - Rye year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. What is clear is that the setup — enclosed garden, ground floor access — is designed with a dog as a permanent part of the arrangement rather than an afterthought.

  • What should I know before visiting Canal Cottage - Rye with my dog?

Dogs are welcome downstairs only — the bedrooms upstairs are off limits, and the owners are upfront about this, so there's no ambiguity on arrival. Only one dog is permitted, and the garden is fully enclosed with patio seating, giving your dog a secure outdoor space. The surrounding area offers good walking too: a flat path runs along the riverbank where the Rother, Brede and Tillingham meet below the town, and the marsh beyond stretches out as far as you'd want to go.
