1 / 16Causeway Cottage
Wolsingham, County Durham
A former village inn, now a cottage for four and one dog in Wolsingham in the Durham Dales, with an inglenook wood burner, an enclosed garden courtyard and a wood-fired hot tub.
Charles II, so the story goes, once rode his horse up the staircase of this building, back when it was The Packhorse Inn. Causeway Cottage is part of one of the oldest buildings in Wolsingham, in Weardale, and these days it makes a dog friendly home for four people and one dog.
The front door opens into an open plan living and dining room built round the old inglenook, a wood burner set into it and the first logs left ready, and a sofa bed for an extra guest. The kitchen looks out over the garden courtyard, with a shower room on the same floor. Up the famous stairs, the front bedroom has a king size bed and a window seat, and the back bedroom a double. A dog gets its own welcome in the doggy extras.
The garden is enclosed, a courtyard with a sitting area and furniture and three steps within it, and one guest wrote that the secure garden was a lovely bonus for their dog. There is a wood-fired hot tub out there too, with the first logs supplied. After a day in the forest, the dog stretches out on the courtyard stones while the tub heats, and later the inglenook takes over.
Hamsterley Forest is five minutes away by car, miles of trails through the trees for a dog to explore, and Weardale runs away west from the town. High Force, the great waterfall on the Tees, is a longer drive over into Teesdale, and Auckland Castle at Bishop Auckland makes an afternoon out.

Book with cottages.comFrequently Asked Questions
Is Causeway Cottage dog friendly?
Yes, Causeway Cottage welcomes one dog alongside up to four people. Your dog even gets their own doggy extras on arrival, so they're genuinely part of the welcome rather than an afterthought.
Are dogs allowed at Causeway Cottage year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. What we can say is that the cottage has plenty of year-round appeal for dogs, from the enclosed courtyard garden to the nearby trails at Hamsterley Forest.
What should I know before visiting Causeway Cottage with my dog?
The cottage accommodates one dog, so it's best suited to single-dog households or trips. The enclosed courtyard garden is a real bonus for dogs — one previous guest specifically called it out as a lovely secure space — and Hamsterley Forest is just five minutes away by car for longer walks through the trees.
