Helton is a small village on the eastern side of the Lake District, off the main tourist routes, and Chapel Cottage is an eighteenth century Cumbrian house in it with long panoramic views. Dog friendly and sleeping six, it keeps many of its original features, with a wood burner, logs included, and two dogs welcome.

The garden is at the front and it is enclosed, laid out in terraces, a patio with its table and barbecue on one of them, so two dogs can go straight out while the view does the rest. There are 14 steps up to the front door, which is worth knowing for an older dog or a heavy bag. The owners suggest keeping an eye out for red squirrels, and a dog will certainly be doing so.

Inside, the living room has the burner, there is a separate dining room and a utility room for wet coats and towels, and a toilet on the ground floor. Upstairs the main bedroom is kingsize with its own shower room, and there is a twin, a room with bunk beds and a family bathroom, with a stair gate provided. A family of five or six, two dogs, and the fire going after a day on the fells makes for a very settled house.

Walks start from the door, across the fields and up onto the open ground towards Askham, where the village greens and Lowther Castle and its gardens are a short walk. Ullswater is a few miles west, with the steamers, Hallin Fell and Aira Force, and Haweswater lies to the south for quieter lakeside walking with the dogs. Penrith is about ten minutes' drive.

Yes, Chapel Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage has an enclosed terraced front garden where your dogs can head straight out, and walks begin from the door across the fields and up onto open fell land.

  • Are dogs allowed at Chapel Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, and with features like a wood burner with logs included and a utility room for wet coats and towels, it's well set up for visits in any season. For confirmation of availability at specific times of year, it's worth checking directly with the owners.

  • What should I know before visiting Chapel Cottage with my dog?
