The owners built Cherry Cottage themselves, in traditional stone with solar power and air source underfloor heating, in the quiet village of Little Salkeld in the Eden Valley. Nine people sleep in this dog friendly house, two dogs come free of charge, and a doggy spa in the outbuilding.

That outbuilding is a large boot room and games room detached from the house, with a dog bath and shower for the end of a muddy walk, a darts board and a retro games console. Back at the house, the enclosed rear garden has a large patio, an outdoor living area and a private hot tub for six, with views across open country. There are gated areas and quiet spots for a dog that needs to settle, and the owners ask that dogs are never left alone in the cottage.

Inside, a wood burner and an 85 inch cinema screen share the living room, and the kitchen has an island and French doors onto the garden. Upstairs, three king size bedrooms, one en suite, and a fourth that sleeps three share a bathroom with a double ended bath and a drencher shower. The shape of an evening is easy to picture: dogs bathed and towelled, the burner lit, a film on the big screen and the hot tub waiting outside under the stars.

The walking starts at the door. Long Meg and Her Daughters, one of the great stone circles of the north, is a short walk away, and Lacy's Caves are carved into a sandstone cliff above the River Eden, a lovely route where dogs are best kept close. The Lake District fells are a short drive west.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Cherry Cottage dog friendly?

Cherry Cottage is genuinely set up for dogs, not just tolerant of them. Two dogs are included free of charge, and there's a dedicated doggy spa in the outbuilding with a dog bath and shower for rinsing off after muddy walks. The enclosed rear garden has gated areas and quiet spots for dogs that need a bit of space to settle.

  • Are dogs allowed at Cherry Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so dogs are welcome as part of the stay throughout the year. With the Lake District fells a short drive away and walks from the door to places like Long Meg and Her Daughters and Lacy's Caves, there's plenty to enjoy with your dog whatever the season.

  • What should I know before visiting Cherry Cottage with my dog?

The owners ask that dogs are never left alone in the cottage, so you'll need to plan around that during your stay. It's also worth keeping dogs close on the route to Lacy's Caves along the River Eden. On the plus side, the doggy spa in the outbuilding makes returning from a walk very easy — dogs can be bathed and dried before you even head back into the house.
