The stay begins at the garden gate, where a porch covers the pale green door. The kitchen and diner is brimming with character: exposed beams, a fireplace whose mantle holds a colourful collection of jugs, a traditional table with school room chairs, a farmhouse dresser, and original windows with wooden shutters to close as the evening draws in. After dinner, step down into the lounge, light the wood burner and put a film on while the dogs doze. Staunton is a great base for walking in the Wye Valley as well as the Forest of Dean, with well marked footpaths through the countryside, among them the Meend circular route with its moorland ponies and views across the Brecons. Symonds Yat is walkable with the dogs through historic woodland, with lunch at the Saracens Head, and there is rock climbing, canoeing and Go Ape at Mallards Park for the adventurous.
