Symonds Yat Rock and the River Wye

Herefordshire

Symonds Yat Rock is the most famous viewpoint in Herefordshire, and the loop that descends from it into the Wye gorge earns the detour to get here. The 8.5 km circuit drops through mixed woodland to the riverside, follows the Wye upstream through the gorge with limestone cliffs rising above, then climbs back through the trees via the Biblins suspension bridge. Peregrine falcons nest on the gorge cliffs each spring and are often visible from the rock itself.

Dogs get an extraordinary sensory combination on this walk: the rich woodland floor of fox, deer, and badger scent on the descent; the cool limestone-and-wet-shale smell of the gorge at water level; and clean river access on shingle banks alongside the Wye. Leads are essential on the cliff edge at the rock itself and near road crossings, but the woodland paths are quiet enough for off-lead dogs with reliable recall. The steep ascent on the return is the main physical challenge — hard work but over quickly.

Yes, this is a brilliant walk for dogs. The 8.5 km circuit takes you through mixed woodland, along the River Wye through the gorge, and back via the Biblins suspension bridge , with shingle banks along the Wye giving dogs easy access for a swim. There's a café at the rock for you too, plus seasonal refreshments near the river crossing.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Symonds Yat Rock and the River Wye?

The woodland paths are quiet enough for dogs with reliable recall to enjoy some off-lead time. That said, leads are essential at the cliff edge at Symonds Yat Rock itself and near any road crossings, so it's worth having one to hand throughout the walk.

  • What should I know before visiting Symonds Yat Rock and the River Wye with my dog?

The main thing to be prepared for is the steep climb back up through the trees on the return leg , it's hard work for both you and your dog, though it doesn't last too long.
