The owners have a private wood with two ponds in it, and they are there for dogs to swim in. Churchtown Farm Cottage is part of a seventeenth century farmhouse at West Anstey, on the Devon edge of Exmoor, dog friendly with three dogs welcome and none of them charged for, and it sleeps eight across three bedrooms.

The enclosed lawn, with its sitting out area and furniture, is reached through a side gate about 34 steps from the front door, so dogs go on a lead for that short walk round and are let off once the gate is shut. It faces south over the fields. There is a second lawn with a table and chairs directly opposite West Anstey church, which is open rather than fenced, and the farm around it is a working one, so dogs stay close there. The ponds in the wood are unfenced, so a dog that cannot swim needs watching there.

Indoors there is a wood burner in the living room with the first basket of logs left ready. One kingsize bedroom and a shower room are on the ground floor, useful for anyone avoiding the stairs, which are steep and narrow. Two more bedrooms with their own shower room are above. The cottage lies under Exmoor's dark skies, and the last trip out with the dogs comes with stars.

The fields around join the Two Moors Way and run on into Exmoor, and Tarr Steps, the ancient clapper bridge over the Barle, is 0.8 miles away. Dunkery Beacon is within an easy drive for a bigger day with three dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Churchtown Farm Cottage dog friendly?

Churchtown Farm Cottage is very much set up for dogs — up to three are welcome, and none of them are charged for. There's an enclosed lawned garden for off-lead time, plus a private wood with two ponds where dogs can swim.

  • Are dogs allowed at Churchtown Farm Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so it's worth contacting the owners directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given the cosy wood burner and first basket of logs left ready, it certainly sounds like a place that suits a winter break as much as a summer one.

  • What should I know before visiting Churchtown Farm Cottage with my dog?

The enclosed lawn is reached via a side gate about 34 steps from the front door, so dogs go on a lead for that short walk around and can be let off once the gate is closed. There's also a second, open lawn opposite the church on a working farm, so dogs need to stay close there. The ponds in the private wood are unfenced, so if your dog isn't a confident swimmer, keep a close eye on them around the water.
