Cysgod Y Dyffryn is a striking family home at Penygroes near Caernarfon, with vaulted ceilings, skylights and sleek contemporary interiors that are elegant and generous in equal measure. Five star and dog friendly, it welcomes three dogs, and its enclosed lawn circles the whole house.

The light and bright hall has a separate WC and space for coats and boots, and beyond it the kitchen and diner, with its electric double oven and American style fridge freezer, is full of light and looks over the garden. The dining table is positioned by the French doors, which open to the garden and the hot tub, so three dogs are on the grass before the plates are cleared.

After dinner there is a choice: the snug, with its games console and Smart TV, or the cosy lounge, where large sofas gather around the wood burner and its opening basket of logs. The king's en suite has a freestanding bath and his and hers basins, while the family bathroom serves the double, twin and bunk rooms. Out on the paved area, the covered hot tub has a table and chairs alongside, and three dogs sprawl on the grass while the tub bubbles.

The royal town of Caernarfon, with its 13th century castle and the Waterside at Doc Fictoria, is within 6 miles, and the seafront at Dinas Dinlle, 4.5 miles away, has an ancient hill fort, a beautiful beach and superb views. Llanberis has the Snowdon Mountain Railway, Beddgelert, Porthmadog and Portmeirion are all worth the trip, and the Wales Coastal Path and Snowdonia National Park are there for whatever energy three dogs have left.
