A bedroom on the ground floor here has a stone fireplace built into the wall of it, which is not a thing modern houses put in bedrooms. Docking Bishops Retreat dates from 1731 and stands in the conservation area of the village, dog friendly, six sleeping in three bedrooms, an enclosed patio behind and two dogs.

You come through into a kitchen and diner with timber beams overhead and a range cooker along one side. The lounge is down a deep step from it, which is worth taking slowly with a dog under your feet, and it holds the original brick fireplace with a burner in the middle of it, first logs supplied. The ground floor also holds the shower room and a cloakroom.

The stairs to the other two bedrooms are the steep cottage sort, a king and a twin above with beams of their own. That leaves the whole downstairs arrangement, bedroom, shower room and garden door, available to anybody who would rather not use them, and two dogs will not use them either. The patio behind is enclosed and has furniture out on it.

Docking keeps its shop and its pub and a good deal of eighteenth century brick and flint, and the lanes going out of it run through arable country in every direction. Castle Acre lies south west, a village built inside the bailey of a Norman castle with a priory in ruins beside it, and Castle Rising is further the same way with a keep still standing square. Two dogs get empty lanes at the door and something worth the drive at the end of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Docking Bishops Retreat dog friendly?

Yes, Docking Bishops Retreat welcomes dogs — up to two. The cottage has an enclosed patio garden at the back, which is ideal for letting them out safely, and the village lanes offer easy walking straight from the door.

  • Are dogs allowed at Docking Bishops Retreat year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's best to check directly with the property when booking to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Docking Bishops Retreat with my dog?

The maximum is two dogs, and there's an enclosed patio with garden furniture where they can spend time outside securely. Inside, the lounge is down a deep step from the kitchen, so it's worth being mindful of that with dogs underfoot. The ground floor also has a bedroom with its own garden door and a shower room, which works well if your dogs prefer to avoid stairs — the cottage's steep cottage-style staircase isn't really suited to them anyway.
