East Shilvinghampton Farm

Weymouth, Dorset

Nine canvas hideaways by the farmyard on a Dorset family farm between Weymouth and Dorchester, with valley views, alpacas to walk, and space for two dogs on the lead.

Book now

The Bartlett family have farmed East Shilvinghampton for more than 80 years, between Weymouth and Dorchester, and their son Henry will happily let you take one of his alpacas for a walk. Bring up to two dogs to this dog friendly farm, kept on a lead, with Martin and Joby's cows, goats and hens about.

Nine canvas hideaways sit close to the farmyard with panoramic views across the valley. Three bedrooms, a kitchen and a wood stove make up each one, with candlelight rather than electricity, and new for 2026 is a wood fired sauna pod looking out over the valley, bookable directly with Martin and Joby. Sit out with the dog in the evening and watch for deer, hares and owls.

Farmer Martin is always happy to stop for a chat on his regular rounds, and there is always something going on: a drovers trail to walk in the morning, dens to build, and children roaming freely within earshot. The honesty shop is well stocked with local produce, beef and pork, Joby's home cooking can be pre-ordered, and Martin fires up the pizza oven, so a day out with the dog ends with supper sorted.

This stretch of Dorset is spoilt for beaches, from Chesil Beach on the Jurassic Coast to West Bay, Hive Beach and Ringstead, and Abbotsbury with its swannery is ten minutes down the road. Weymouth is close for a seaside afternoon, and after a day out the dog comes back to the peace of the valley.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is East Shilvinghampton Farm dog friendly?

Yes, East Shilvinghampton Farm welcomes two dogs per booking. It's a working farm with alpacas, goats, ponies, cattle and chickens, so dogs are on the lead throughout the farm — but with drovers trails nearby, deer and hares in the fields, and the Jurassic Coast just down the hill, there's plenty to keep them busy.

  • Are dogs allowed at East Shilvinghampton Farm year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions, and the canvas hideaways are designed as off-grid retreats with wood stoves rather than boilers, which suggests they're set up for year-round stays. It's worth checking directly with Martin and Joby when you book to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting East Shilvinghampton Farm with my dog?

Dogs must be kept on the lead for the duration of your stay — this is non-negotiable given the working farm environment, and there's no fenced garden as an alternative. Up to two dogs are welcome per booking, and with Chesil Beach a few miles down the hill and good walking country right on the doorstep, most dogs seem to make their peace with the long line fairly quickly.
