Two people and no children. The cottage says so up front, and that one line explains most of what follows. Folly Rigg is a one bedroom stone cottage at Summerbridge in Nidderdale, dog friendly, one dog allowed, and the courtyard behind it is walled, sheltered and enclosed on every side.

Downstairs holds a large open kitchen and diner with the table in it, and a lounge next door built round a wood burner. Upstairs a king sleigh bed takes the bedroom, with the bathroom across the hall carrying a roll top bath and a walk-in shower apart from it. That is the whole building. What a dog gets is a ground floor of warm hard surfaces and a courtyard door two paces from the fire.

Four o'clock and the courtyard has had sun on it since noon. The dog has moved three times to keep up with it and is now flat against the warm side of the wall. Somebody carried a book out and has managed two pages. Indoors the burner is laid but not lit, and nothing at all has been arranged for the evening, which was the entire plan.

Brimham Rocks stand 2 miles up the hill, an outcrop of gritstone weathered into shapes that look deliberate and are not, spread across open moor with paths threading between them. It is National Trust ground and dogs are welcome over all of it. Below that, Nidderdale runs down the valley in walled fields and small stone villages, with enough of it round the cottage to fill a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Folly Rigg Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Folly Rigg Cottage welcomes dogs — one dog is allowed. The ground floor has warm hard surfaces throughout, and a walled, enclosed courtyard sits just a couple of paces from the wood burner, making it a genuinely comfortable setup for a dog.

  • Are dogs allowed at Folly Rigg Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so there's nothing to suggest it's limited to certain times of year. If you want to confirm availability for a specific stay, it's always worth checking directly with the property.

  • What should I know before visiting Folly Rigg Cottage with my dog?

The cottage allows one dog and is set up for two adults — children aren't permitted, so it's a quietly grown-up retreat. Beyond the cottage itself, Brimham Rocks is just 2 miles up the hill, a National Trust gritstone outcrop where dogs are welcome across all of it, and Nidderdale's walled fields and stone villages offer plenty more walking right on the doorstep.
