Foresters Cottage

Tarbat, Highlands

The former forester's cottage on a Highland estate above the Cromarty Firth, sleeping five, with a large enclosed garden, a log burner, woodland walks from the door and two dogs welcome.

Book now

The estate forester lived here once. Foresters Cottage stands a little apart from a hamlet on a Highland country estate in Easter Ross, above the Cromarty Firth, and today it sleeps five as a dog friendly holiday home, two dogs welcome and a large garden fenced all round.

Almost all of it is on the ground floor: a living and dining room with a log burner, the first fuel supplied, a conservatory for the view, a kitchen with a coffee machine, a double, a twin and the bathroom. A single bedroom sits up the stairs for the fifth guest. Guests who came with their dogs mention the garden before anything else, and the doggy extras and the owner's home baking not long after.

Out the back there is a patio with seating and a barbecue, and a big garden beyond it enclosed right the way round: ground where two dogs can be let out first thing and left to it. Buzzards and kestrels hunt over the fields, red kites and osprey pass overhead, and smaller birds come to the garden itself, which gives a dog plenty to watch from the patio while the kettle boils.

Woodland and riverside walks run from the cottage down to the shore of the Firth, whose salt marsh and mudflats hold tens of thousands of wading birds through the winter, so dogs stay close near the flocks. The RSPB reserve at Nigg Bay is near, Cromarty and its beach are across the water, and wildlife cruises from Cromarty go out after the Moray Firth dolphins. Dornoch's long sands are within reach to the north.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Foresters Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Foresters Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. Guests frequently mention the large enclosed garden as a highlight — it's fenced all the way round, so your dogs can be let out freely without worry. The owners also provide doggy extras to help settle them in.

  • Are dogs allowed at Foresters Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and the property is set up with year-round dog ownership in mind — from the enclosed garden for early morning let-outs to the log burner for warming up after winter walks. The salt marsh and mudflats of the Cromarty Firth attract tens of thousands of wading birds through winter, so it's worth keeping dogs close near the shore at that time of year.

  • What should I know before visiting Foresters Cottage with my dog?

The cottage takes a maximum of two dogs, and the large garden is fully enclosed, which makes arrivals and early mornings easy. Woodland and riverside walks lead directly from the cottage down to the Firth, but the salt marsh and mudflats draw large flocks of wading birds — particularly in winter — so you'll want to keep dogs under close control near the shore. The RSPB reserve at Nigg Bay is also nearby, so it's worth checking their guidelines before visiting with your dog.
