Fountain Violet Farm

Kingswear, Devon

Six canvas hideaways on the Jones family's beef farm outside Kingswear, with views over the River Dart, walks from the tent, and two dogs kept on a lead around the cattle.

Wake up at Fountain Violet and the River Dart is the first thing you see. The Jones family raise beef cattle across 130 acres outside the village of Kingswear, between Dartmouth, Torquay and Dartmoor, and their six canvas hideaways are surrounded by sea views of the South Devon coastline. Two dogs may come to this dog friendly farm, and they are kept on a lead throughout it.

Inside each hideaway are three bedrooms, a cupboard bed among them, with a kitchen and a wood burning stove, and candlelight and oil lamps in place of electricity. With the stove and lamp service booked, everything is lit for an arrival before six, and the dogs walk into a warm tent at the end of the journey. Come by train and Edward will even collect you from Kingswear station after the steam railway from Paignton.

Walking is the heart of a stay here. Beautiful routes start right from your tent, and Edward is always happy to share the best of them, so a dog's morning can begin the moment the canvas is rolled up. Evenings bring a sunset campfire, and the farmer usually fires up the pizza oven during your stay.

The South West Coast Path is just five minutes from the farm, which puts a dog on the Devon coast in no time, and Mill Bay Cove is a 20 minute walk for a swim. Several pubs and restaurants are within walking distance too. Dartmouth is a steam train and passenger ferry ride away, and Greenway, Coleton Fishacre and Blackpool Sands are all close for a day out.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Fountain Violet Farm dog friendly?

Yes, Fountain Violet Farm welcomes dogs — up to two per stay. It's a working beef farm, so dogs are kept on leads throughout, which the farm is upfront about rather than tucking away in the small print.

  • Are dogs allowed at Fountain Violet Farm year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend checking directly with Fountain Violet Farm when you book to confirm availability for your dates.

  • What should I know before visiting Fountain Violet Farm with my dog?

Leads are required across the farm at all times — this is a working cattle holding, so it's a firm rule and a practical one. The good news is that the location more than compensates: Mill Bay Cove is a 20-minute walk downhill, the South West Coast Path runs along the headland nearby, and the passenger ferry from Kingswear takes you and your dog across to Dartmouth without needing the car.
