Five dogs, and a two acre paddock set aside for them. Four Seasons Cottage lets guests have the exercise paddock free on request, and that is on top of the enclosed back garden that comes with the house. This is a dog friendly house for twelve near Great Torrington in north Devon, at the edge of a rural village, with four bedrooms and a bathroom for each of them.

Inside, a kitchen diner big enough for the whole party does the work, and a living room with a log burner sits beside it. There is a cinema room with table football, and bedrooms on both floors, one upstairs with a jacuzzi bath. Outside, the garden is patio and pebbles with seating, a barbecue and a private hot tub, enclosed so the dogs can wander between the doors and the tub without anyone keeping count.

Beyond the garden the owners share seven acres with just one other property: a games lawn with football goals, a small lake with free coarse fishing, resident horses and a flock of free-range hens whose eggs guests are welcome to collect. With the horses and the hens about, dogs stay on a lead out there, and the paddock is where they run. A private pool opens from April to September, and the owner will supervise a session grooming the horses for anyone who asks.

The Tarka Trail is a few minutes' drive, a long path through Instow, Bideford and Barnstaple with dog friendly pubs along the way. Great Torrington stands on its hill above the river with commons all round it for walking, and the north Devon and Cornish beaches, many open to dogs, are within about twenty minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Four Seasons Cottage dog friendly?

Four Seasons Cottage welcomes up to five dogs and is set up with them genuinely in mind. The enclosed back garden means dogs can move freely between the house and the outdoor hot tub, and there is a two acre exercise paddock available free on request for a proper run around.

  • Are dogs allowed at Four Seasons Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so they appear to be welcome throughout the year. The private pool is the one feature with a seasonal window, running from April to September, but the dog-friendly spaces including the garden and paddock are available regardless.

  • What should I know before visiting Four Seasons Cottage with my dog?

The wider seven-acre grounds are shared with resident horses and free-range hens, so dogs need to be kept on a lead out there — the two acre paddock is the dedicated space for letting them off. It's worth requesting the paddock in advance as it's offered free but on request, and if you're planning walks nearby, the Tarka Trail and Great Torrington's commons are both within a short drive.
