Fox House

Bakewell, Derbyshire

A five bedroom house for ten at Bakewell in the White Peak, with four king-size rooms, a fully enclosed garden and two dogs welcome.

Book now

Ten people go into five bedrooms here, four of them king-size and the fifth a twin. Fox House takes two dogs at Bakewell, dog friendly, with a fully enclosed garden behind it. Bedrooms of that shape make it a house for adults rather than for children in bunks, and the enclosure means nobody spends the week counting animals through a gate.

The garden needs its fence, because a house this size empties into it within about four minutes of the cars being unloaded. There is a utility room off the kitchen for the wet end of a week, a range oven that will cook for ten without being asked twice, and a table tennis table out in the garage. Two dogs have the whole enclosure to themselves while that goes on indoors.

By nine the house has divided itself up. Somebody is still at the range, three or four are outside because the garden is shut and nobody has to keep track of heads, and two dogs are working the perimeter for the fourth time that day. The twin room went to whoever arrived first. Upstairs a door has closed on the half of the party that has had enough of the other half, which is what five bedrooms are for.

Magpie Mine, 4 miles west at Sheldon, is the best preserved lead mine in Britain: a Cornish engine house and a chimney standing in a bare field, the shaft capped alongside them, the works left roughly where the last men out walked away from them. The ground up there is high, level and largely empty. Two dogs get open walking with an abandoned industry in the middle of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Fox House dog friendly?

Yes, Fox House welcomes up to two dogs. The property has a fully enclosed garden, which means your dogs can roam freely outside without you needing to watch the gate — a genuine plus when you're sharing a house with a group of ten.

  • Are dogs allowed at Fox House year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the property directly to confirm availability for your dates. What is clear is that the setup — enclosed garden, utility room for muddy kit — suits a dog-friendly visit in any season.

  • What should I know before visiting Fox House with my dog?

Fox House takes a maximum of two dogs, so if your group is bringing pets, bear that limit in mind when planning. The fully enclosed garden gives dogs a secure space to let off steam, and there's a utility room off the kitchen for drying out after wet walks. Nearby, Magpie Mine at Sheldon — around 4 miles west — offers open, largely empty high ground that's well suited to a good off-lead walk.
