Garden Cottage

Tain, Highlands

A three bedroom cottage for six outside Tain, down a quiet lane to a sandy beach, with an enclosed garden, a fenced half acre paddock and two dogs welcome.

Book now

The lane outside ends at the sea. Garden Cottage stands on a quiet no through road a mile from Tain that runs on down to a sandy beach about 100 yards away, a beach that is nearly always empty. It is a rose covered dog friendly cottage for six, attached to the owner's stone farmhouse, with two dogs welcome.

What a dog gets here is ground, and more than one sort of it. The cottage garden is enclosed, with a sitting-out area and furniture. Beyond it there is a fenced paddock of half an acre for guests alone, space for a dog to run flat out and for children to play games. The farm runs to 16 acres, and there are horses and sheep in the fields close by, so dogs are on leads anywhere outside the fence.

Inside, the open plan room looks across the garden, with a long dining table at one end and the kitchen at the other. The king bedroom is on the ground floor with an en suite bath and shower, which spares an older dog the stairs if that is where it sleeps, and upstairs are a double, a twin and a shower room.

A dog on the beach here is seldom the only animal watching the water. Seals, dolphins and otters are all seen along this coast, and deer come down to the fields. Tain golf course borders the grounds, with the town beyond, and the villages of Balintore and Shandwick are ten minutes away by car, as is the Tarbat Discovery Centre and its Pictish stones.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Garden Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Garden Cottage warmly welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage has an enclosed garden with a sitting-out area and a private fenced half-acre paddock where dogs can run freely, plus a sandy beach just 100 yards down the lane that's nearly always empty.

  • Are dogs allowed at Garden Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions, so it's best to check directly with the owner when booking. What's worth knowing is that the beach, paddock and enclosed garden are there whatever time of year you visit.

  • What should I know before visiting Garden Cottage with my dog?

The cottage sits on a working farm with horses and sheep in nearby fields, so dogs need to be kept on leads anywhere outside the fenced paddock and enclosed garden. The good news is that the half-acre paddock is reserved for guests alone, giving dogs plenty of space to stretch their legs safely. It's also worth noting that the ground floor king bedroom has an en suite, which is handy if an older or less mobile dog needs to sleep downstairs without tackling the stairs.
