Book now

Ten acres of meadow surround Grange Cottage, in the grounds of Ovington Grange, and the owners who live on site describe themselves simply as animal lovers. This detached, dog friendly house sleeps four on a single level with wide doorways, and two well behaved dogs are welcome.

There are two enclosed spaces outside. At the side of the cottage is a large lawned courtyard garden, enclosed, with furniture set out, and it is the place for two dogs to stretch their legs. Off the living room, two sets of patio doors open onto a smaller enclosed patio that faces south, with a barbecue and a table for morning coffee. Out in the wider grounds there is a small unfenced stream, about 220 yards from the cottage, worth knowing about with a dog that loves water.

Inside it is roomy and easy. The open plan kitchen and dining room has everything including a coffee machine, and the living room has deep sofas round an electric wood burner. The king bedroom comes with an en suite shower and the twin, which can become a super king, has windows on both sides. One guest on a third visit with their dog said there was plenty of room for the dog too, which is the short version.

Stabling is available by arrangement for anyone bringing a horse as well as a dog. Barnard Castle, with the Bowes Museum and the ruins of Egglestone Abbey on the river, is a short drive, and the Roman bridge at Piercebridge is close. Richmond's castle and the Swale are further south, and the North Pennines rise to the west.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Grange Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Grange Cottage welcomes up to two well behaved dogs. The owners live on site and describe themselves as animal lovers, so you're in good hands. Outside, there's a large enclosed lawned courtyard garden where dogs can stretch their legs, plus a smaller enclosed south-facing patio off the living room.

  • Are dogs allowed at Grange Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and nothing suggests otherwise. If you want to confirm availability for a particular time of year, it's always worth checking directly with the owners when you book.

  • What should I know before visiting Grange Cottage with my dog?

The cottage is single storey with wide doorways, making it easy to move around with a dog in tow, and past guests have noted there's plenty of room inside too. Both outdoor spaces are enclosed, which is reassuring, but it's worth knowing there's a small unfenced stream in the wider grounds, about 220 yards from the cottage — handy to be aware of if your dog is a water lover. Stabling is also available by arrangement if you're travelling with a horse as well as a dog.
