Longnewton, Scottish Borders
A farm cottage for four near St Boswells and Melrose, with a fully enclosed side garden, a hot tub, a wood burner and farm tracks to walk, two dogs welcome.
St Boswells has a bookshop that people drive out from Edinburgh for, which is a strange thing to be able to say about a Borders village and entirely true. Greenknowe Cottage stands in the farmland just outside it: a dog friendly cottage for four with a fully enclosed garden running along the side of the building and a hot tub out in it. Two dogs, and a farm to walk them over.
Two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one of each on the ground floor, which keeps things simple for anybody who would rather not climb at the end of a long day. A wood burner takes care of the lounge and there is secure bike storage outside. The enclosed garden runs the length of one wall, and it is the part of the property the dogs will wear out first.
Longnewton is farmland and very little else, which is exactly the point of it. The cottage looks onto working ground, the tracks across it can be walked, and two dogs will be out on them well before the kettle has boiled. The hot tub deals with whatever the day has done to everybody's legs, and the wood burner deals with what is left of the evening.
Melrose, Jedburgh and Kelso each sit within a short drive, every one of them built around a ruined 12th century abbey, with the Tweed threading between them. Scott's View looks across the Eildon Hills from above Dryburgh. For the bigger walking day the border ridge rises to the south, Chew Green's Roman camp 17.5 miles off over the line and the Cheviots behind it, which is more ground than two dogs can use.

Book with holidaycottages.co.ukFrequently Asked Questions
Is Greenknowe Cottage dog friendly?
Yes, Greenknowe Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The property has a fully enclosed garden running the length of one side of the building, and the surrounding farmland offers tracks you can walk them over almost as soon as you arrive.
Are dogs allowed at Greenknowe Cottage year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given the nature of the property — a rural farm cottage with an enclosed garden and working land all around — it's set up with dogs in mind throughout.
What should I know before visiting Greenknowe Cottage with my dog?
The cottage accepts a maximum of two dogs, so it's not the right fit for larger groups of pets. The enclosed garden gives them a safe space to let off steam, and the farm tracks beyond the gate are there to be walked — just be aware you're on working farmland and behave accordingly.
