Grizedale Lodge is a luxurious former hunting lodge deep in the heart of Grizedale Forest, and it welcomes sixteen guests and six dogs. Surrounded by open countryside and woodland, with large, elegant social spaces indoors and out, this dog friendly lodge gathers the whole extended family under one roof, and all eight bedrooms come with en suites.
Coats and muddy boots go in the roomy front porch, well used when six dogs come back off the forest trails. At the heart of the house is a vast lounge, light and bright from its large bay window, with a warming wood burner and gorgeous sofas. The impressive dining room has an enormous table with seats for everyone, and swing doors lead through to a professionally equipped kitchen with a Rangemaster.
Four poster beds, a free standing bath and a romantic balcony with woodland views are among the bedrooms, most of them up a grand staircase. Outside, a large raised deck framed by mature trees and shrubs has steps down to a multi level garden of lawn and terraces. The owners ask that children and dogs are supervised whenever they are outdoors, as the car park is open to the road and the garden opens onto the surrounding fields, so lawn time comes with company: a drink on the deck, six dogs on the grass below, and somebody keeping count.
Grizedale Forest is a haven for walkers, with trails for all abilities and a sculpture trail of permanent and visiting artworks to find along the way with the dogs. Go Ape swings through the canopy, and Windermere, Ambleside and Coniston Water are all within 12 miles.
