Grizedale, Cumbria
A former hunting lodge in Grizedale Forest sleeping 16 across eight bedrooms, with a multi level garden and six dogs welcome.
Six dogs. That is what Grizedale Lodge takes, and nothing else in this collection comes close to it. A former hunting lodge standing in the middle of Grizedale Forest, it is the rare dog friendly stay built for the whole extended family and every animal attached to it, with eight bedrooms, a bathroom for each of them, and a garden that steps down the hillside in lawn, terrace and enclosed ground.
Sixteen people and six dogs need somewhere to spread out to, and this is a house that was designed for a party rather than adapted for one. There are four posters, open fires in more than one room, and doors enough that nobody is standing in anybody else's evening. The raised decking takes the long table. The lawn below it takes whatever the dogs decide to do with it, and there is enough of it that they can do it at speed.
Picture the last hour of a day here. Fires lit at both ends of the house, boots abandoned by a door that has seen far worse, six dogs asleep in various states of collapse across a hall floor originally laid for a shooting party, and somebody still upstairs working out which of the eight bedrooms they have ended up with.
The forest starts at the gate. Grizedale runs to 8,000 acres of conifer and broadleaf threaded with waymarked trails and a sculpture park, and a dog can be walked through it every day of a week without repeating a mile. Beyond the trees the whole southern Lake District is inside half an hour, with Coniston and Hawkshead close enough to be an afternoon rather than an expedition.

Is Grizedale Lodge dog friendly?
Grizedale Lodge is one of the most dog-friendly stays you'll find anywhere in the UK, welcoming up to six dogs at once. The multi-level garden — lawn, terrace and enclosed grounds stepping down the hillside — gives dogs plenty of room to roam, and the forest literally starts at the gate.
Are dogs allowed at Grizedale Lodge year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, and with 8,000 acres of Grizedale Forest on the doorstep and fires to come home to, it's the kind of place that works just as well in the depths of winter as it does in summer. We'd recommend confirming directly with the property for your specific dates.
What should I know before visiting Grizedale Lodge with my dog?
The lodge takes up to six dogs, so it's well set up for groups arriving with multiple animals — there's space to spread out both inside and across the garden. The hall floor has clearly seen plenty of muddy boots and tired dogs before yours, and with Grizedale Forest's waymarked trails beginning right at the gate, you'll want to come prepared for long days out walking.
