Four lodge pods stand together on this ground at Irthington and Hadrians Wall Rest is one of them, sleeping two, with a single dog along. Dog friendly at pod scale, and not roughing it either: a proper double bed, a full shower room, a lounge and a table, and private decking outside with a hot tub set on it. There is fishing water on the site.

The pod is one room and it works. You come in at the living end, the kitchen sitting behind the seating and the bed screened away at the far wall, and the shower room turns out to be a genuine one rather than a cubicle wedged into a corner. The decking belongs to this lodge alone. The ground the pods stand in is enclosed but held in common, which puts a dog on a line rather than loose.

The people this suits are the ones who have stopped wanting an itinerary. Water to fish on the site, a tub to sit in, one dog to keep half an eye on, and none of it needing a plan. A cottage hands you rooms you never use. This hands you a bed, a door and the outside, which for two people and an animal is very often enough.

East of here the Wall reaches its best country, climbing onto the whin sill where Walltown Crags carry it along a ridge with Northumberland falling away on one side. The Roman Army Museum sits at the foot of that stretch. South, the Eden valley opens in long green miles towards Appleby. Closer than any of it, the riverbank below the site gives a dog a quiet hour before dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hadrians Wall Rest dog friendly?

Yes, one dog is welcome at Hadrians Wall Rest. The pod is set up for a couple and their dog — compact, comfortable, and with private decking outside so you have your own space to settle in.

  • Are dogs allowed at Hadrians Wall Rest year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, but it's worth contacting the site directly to confirm availability and any conditions before you book.

  • What should I know before visiting Hadrians Wall Rest with my dog?

The pods share a common enclosed ground, so dogs need to be kept on a line rather than left to roam freely — worth bearing in mind if your dog isn't used to that. On the plus side, there's a riverbank below the site that makes for a quiet, easy walk before dark.
