Hazel Cottage

Portrush, County Antrim

Book now

Hazel Cottage is a bungalow in the middle of Portrush and the whole of it sits on one floor, which for a dog that has stopped enjoying stairs settles the question before anybody has unpacked. It is a dog friendly stay for six across three bedrooms, one dog welcome, with an enclosed garden at the back and the sea under a mile off in more than one direction.

There are two gardens here and only one of them belongs to the dog. The front is lawn, open to the road, and it is where the car goes. The back is the enclosed one: gravel rather than grass, a furnished patio, a barbecue, and a detached summer house at one side with a sofa in it. The kitchen door opens straight onto it, so the dog goes out that way and stays there.

Inside is bright and plain in the way a seaside bungalow should be. A lounge takes one side of the hall, the kitchen and dining room run across the back, and three bedrooms, a double and two twins, sit off one corridor with the shower room between them. Six fit without anybody drawing the sofa, and the dog works out by the second evening that the summer house beats the patio.

Portrush stands on a headland with sand on either side, which is the argument for staying in the town rather than out of it. Portstewart Strand runs 3.2 miles west, dune backed, with the cliff path linking the two towns above it and dogs welcome at the far end of it all year. East the coast hardens into limestone and basalt and keeps going until it reaches the Giant's Causeway.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hazel Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Hazel Cottage welcomes one dog. The whole property sits on a single floor, so there are no stairs to navigate, and the enclosed rear garden is accessed directly from the kitchen door — making it easy to let your dog out without going through the front of the house.

  • Are dogs allowed at Hazel Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs staying at the cottage itself, so it appears to be welcome year round. Worth noting for nearby walks: dogs are allowed at the far end of Portstewart Strand all year, which is a good option when seasonal beach rules apply closer to town.

  • What should I know before visiting Hazel Cottage with my dog?

The property allows one dog, so it's not suited to multi-dog households. The rear garden is enclosed and gravel-surfaced with a patio and summer house, giving your dog a secure outdoor space, while the front garden is open to the road so you'll want to keep that in mind. The sea is under a mile away in more than one direction, with Portstewart Strand — a 3.2-mile dog-friendly beach — reachable to the west.
