Heathwaite Farm - Hay Barn

Coniston, Cumbria

A stone barn for five on a working farm above Coniston, with an enclosed front garden, a log burner and the Old Man standing over the yard, two dogs welcome.

Book now

The logs come off the farm you are staying on. Heathwaite Farm sits up a steep single track lane above Coniston, and the Hay Barn is one of several stone buildings the owners have converted there, sleeping five and dog friendly for two. What the hill gives you is the valley below and the Old Man of Coniston standing over the yard.

The barn is arranged upside down. One flight climbs from the hall to the living space, an open lounge and kitchen with a log burner and a dining room off it, and another drops to the bedrooms below, a king and a second room holding a double and a single. That puts the beds at the quiet end and the living space at the height of the view, with a dog free to pick either.

The picnic bench in the front garden has the last of the sun on it and both dogs are lying underneath it instead of on the grass. Somebody has walked down through the courtyard and out over the meadows, then come back up the hill a good deal slower than they went down. The log burner is lit, the whole barn smells of it, and the Old Man has gone the colour it goes.

Coniston village lies below with shops, cafes and the Ruskin Museum, and the steam yacht Gondola runs from the jetty for anybody who would rather see the lake from the middle. Walking starts at the farm gate. Goat's Water and the Old Man go straight up from here, Tarn Hows has a made path a dog of any age can manage, and Grizedale's forest tracks sit close behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Heathwaite Farm - Hay Barn dog friendly?

Yes, the Hay Barn welcomes up to two dogs. It's a proper dog-friendly stay rather than an afterthought — there's an enclosed front garden for them to settle in, and the barn itself gives them the run of the place, from the living space upstairs to the bedrooms below.

  • Are dogs allowed at Heathwaite Farm - Hay Barn year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend checking directly with the owners when you book to confirm availability and any conditions around your stay.

  • What should I know before visiting Heathwaite Farm - Hay Barn with my dog?

The barn sits at the top of a steep single track lane above Coniston, so the approach is something to bear in mind if your dog travels in the car. Once you're there, walking starts straight from the farm gate — Tarn Hows has a made path suitable for dogs of any age, while Goat's Water and the Old Man of Coniston offer a more serious outing, and Grizedale's forest tracks are close by too.
