Tirril is a small stone village on the shelf of land between Penrith and the top of Ullswater, quiet enough that most drive through without registering the name. High Brow Cottage stands there looking over fields towards the fells. Six sleep here with a pair of dogs, and the way in is down steps from the parking into an enclosed garden. One room in this dog friendly house exists purely for muddy dogs.
The stone floored sunroom off the lounge is the room that decides this one. It holds the best view in the building and a hard floor, exactly what two dogs want after a wet fell, and it doubles as the place somebody escapes to with a book. The rest of the ground floor is one open space with parquet, beams and a wood burner, a bathroom at the foot of the stairs and another above. Three bedrooms take the top.
Half past five and the hot tub has people in it who said they were only going to look at it. Both dogs are through in the sunroom on the stone, dried off at the door and evidently satisfied that it is the best floor in the house. Somebody at the wood burner is building an argument for lighting it in June. The fells opposite are working through their evening colours and nobody is cooking anything.
The Ullswater Way makes a 20-mile circuit of the lake and is best taken in sections. Above the village, Heughscar Hill carries a limestone edge with the north end of the water below and a Bronze Age stone circle on the moor behind. Wordsworth's family house stands down the lane at Sockbridge. None of that is closed to a dog.
