From the lounge at High Tide the view is Boulmer Beach, the old smugglers' village and the North Sea beyond. The cottage is a single storey, dog friendly home for four people and two dogs, on a working farm on the fringe of the village, with the sand a few minutes' walk away.

The garden at the back is large, lawned and enclosed, with decking and seating, and it looks over the farm. There are sheep beyond the wall and farm vehicles coming and going, which a dog will watch for hours from the safe side of it, and there is a single step within the garden. Inside there is one step at the entrance and another up to the bathroom, and nothing else to climb.

The open plan lounge and dining room has a wood burner, fuel to start it, and big windows onto the sea. A coffee machine sits in the kitchen, and the two bedrooms are a king and a pair of zip and link singles that make up as one big bed. It is a place for sea air and early nights: back from the sand, the dogs towelled off, the stove lit and the light going over the water.

Boulmer's beach is a long sweep of sand and rock pools, and the Northumberland coast path runs from the village north to Howick and Craster, where Dunstanburgh Castle stands on its headland, and south to Alnmouth and its wide estuary sands. Alnwick, with its castle and gardens, is a short drive inland for a day when the dogs have had their fill of sand.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is High Tide dog friendly?

Yes, High Tide welcomes up to two dogs. It's a single storey cottage, which makes life easy for dogs of all sizes and ages, and there's a large enclosed lawned garden at the back where they can roam safely while you sit on the decking and watch the farm.

  • Are dogs allowed at High Tide year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth checking directly with the owner when you book. What we can say is that Boulmer Beach and the Northumberland coast path are the kind of places that reward a visit in any season.

  • What should I know before visiting High Tide with my dog?

The cottage is largely step-free, but there is one step at the entrance and another up to the bathroom, plus a single step within the garden, so worth bearing in mind if your dog struggles with stairs. The garden backs onto a working farm with sheep beyond the wall and farm vehicles passing, so dogs need to be secure — happily, the garden is enclosed and your dog can watch all the action from a safe distance. Boulmer Beach is just a short walk away, and the coast path connects you to miles of Northumberland shoreline in both directions.
