Highland Cottage

Whitehaven, Cumbria

A detached bungalow for four above Whitehaven, all on one level, with an enclosed lawned garden, sea views to the Isle of Man and two medium sized dogs welcome.

Book now

From its raised plot, Highland Cottage looks out across the Cumbrian coast to the Isle of Man and Scotland. It sits just outside Whitehaven, and this detached, dog friendly bungalow takes four people and two medium sized dogs, with the western Lakes close behind it.

Being all on one level, it suits a dog that is past its best on stairs as much as it suits people. The kingsize room comes with an en suite shower, the twin can be zipped into a super kingsize, and there is a family bathroom. The living and dining room gets plenty of daylight, and the conservatory at the back has a comfortable sofa and looks over the garden, which is where the dogs will be watching from.

The garden is on a large plot and it is enclosed: lawn, patio, a table and chairs, a greenhouse and fruit trees. There are steps in it, and a ramp is available for a dog or a person who needs one. The welcome pack comes with doggy extras, and a garage takes the bikes. After a day on the fells, dogs on the lawn and the sea going gold behind them is how the evenings here tend to finish.

Whitehaven's harbour and The Beacon Museum are a short trip down the hill, and St Bees Head, where the Coast to Coast walk begins, sits above a long sandy beach just along the coast. Inland, the Lake District National Park begins a few miles away, and Ennerdale Water, one of the least developed of the lakes, has a circuit that makes a fine day with a dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Highland Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Highland Cottage welcomes up to two medium sized dogs. The enclosed garden gives them room to roam safely, and the welcome pack includes some doggy extras to get your stay off to a good start.

  • Are dogs allowed at Highland Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth getting in touch with the owner directly to confirm availability for your dates. Given that the cottage is set up with dogs very much in mind, it's a good sign that they're a genuine part of the welcome here.

  • What should I know before visiting Highland Cottage with my dog?

The cottage takes a maximum of two medium sized dogs, so it's worth bearing that in mind when you book. Being a single-storey bungalow, it's a great fit for older or less mobile dogs, and a ramp is available in the garden for any dog who finds the steps tricky. The garden is enclosed with lawn and patio space, and there's brilliant walking nearby — from the beach at St Bees Head to the quieter shores of Ennerdale Water in the Lake District.
