Hillhead Cottage

Buxton, Derbyshire

A three bedroom house for six on the edge of Buxton, with an enclosed garden looking out to the hills and two dogs welcome.

This house has one aspect and everything defers to it. The lawn faces the hills, the French doors out of the kitchen face the hills, and two of the three bedrooms do the same. Hillhead Cottage stands at the edge of Buxton and takes six. It is dog friendly, there are three bedrooms to two bathrooms, the garden behind is enclosed, and two dogs are allowed. A building that all points one way settles where everybody ends up without anybody having to decide it.

Downstairs runs kitchen and diner into lounge with a WC off the hall, and those doors make the garden an extension of the room rather than somewhere you go out to. Five sleep upstairs across three bedrooms, one of them with a shower room, and the lounge sofa bed takes a sixth. Two dogs will be at whichever set of doors is open.

The argument for being three miles out rather than in the middle is what happens when you turn the other way. The town is a short drive downhill, and the ground at this end is moor and limestone with paths onto it directly. Two dogs get the second of those every morning and nobody has to load a car to make it happen.

Two miles from the door, Poole's Cavern goes down into the hill under Grin Low, and the wood above it climbs to Solomon's Temple, a stone tower on the top with the whole plateau laid out round it. West of that the Goyt runs in a long trough between reservoirs and heather with tracks down both sides. Two dogs get a tower on a hilltop and a valley with no road down it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hillhead Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Hillhead Cottage welcomes dogs — up to two are allowed. The garden is enclosed, which makes it a relaxed base for dogs and owners alike, and the French doors from the kitchen mean the outside feels like a natural extension of the living space rather than somewhere you have to make a deliberate trip to.

  • Are dogs allowed at Hillhead Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend checking directly with the owner when you book to confirm availability and any conditions around your stay.

  • What should I know before visiting Hillhead Cottage with my dog?

The property takes a maximum of two dogs, and the enclosed garden gives them a safe space to settle in from the moment you arrive. One of the best things about the location is that moorland and limestone paths are accessible directly from the house, so morning walks don't require loading the car — which tends to suit dogs (and people) rather well.
