Hoku is the sister shack to Vega, set above Llangollen with an incredible view over the Dee Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a warm, dog friendly cabin for two with everything for a few relaxing days off grid, and Shacks describe it as fully enclosed, which gives a dog owner real peace of mind.

Sheep are occasionally nearby, so the dog's lead goes on for the walk between the car and the shack. You can park at the bottom of the stone track and walk about 100m up a short hill, or in summer drive to the top, where it is a short 30m walk to the door. Close the gates as you pass through.

Tucked inside are a king size bed, a shower room, a kitchenette, a wood burner and a selection of books and board games, and outside an outdoor bath with the valley below. It is hard to draw yourself away from the cosiness of the shack and that view, and the dog will not try very hard either.

Llangollen is just below, with lunch or wine tasting at Gales, Wales' oldest wine bar, and local produce from Zingiber Wholefoods for cooking at the cabin. Hike the Welsh hills with the dog or explore the historic town, and the Shacks wild sauna is only a two minute drive away.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hoku dog friendly?

Yes, Hoku is fully dog friendly. The cabin is small and completely fenced, which makes it a genuinely relaxed stay for dogs — no need to worry about them wandering off once you're through the gate.

  • Are dogs allowed at Hoku year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so they're welcome as part of the experience. It's worth checking directly with the host when you book, particularly if you're visiting in wetter months when the stone track up to the cabin is best walked rather than driven.

  • What should I know before visiting Hoku with my dog?

The cabin sits on a working hillside farm, and sheep are sometimes in the area, so you'll need to keep your dog on the lead between the car and the gate. Once inside the fence, the lead can come off and your dog has a secure space to settle — reportedly with a strong preference for the rug by the stove.
