Holly Tree Cottage

Tain, Highlands

A 19th century detached cottage for six in Tain, with two wood burners, a generous enclosed lawned garden, a reading snug and two dogs welcome.

Book now

Tain was granted its first royal charter in 1066, which makes it the oldest royal burgh in Scotland, and Holly Tree Cottage is a 19th century house on a quiet street within an easy walk of its centre. A detached dog friendly cottage sleeping six, with three bedrooms, two wood burners and two dogs welcome.

The kitchen is where the week gets spent. It is a big room with an enormous wood burner at its heart, a dining table, and patio doors opening straight onto the garden, so a dog can drift in and out while the cooking goes on. The rear lawn is enclosed and a good size, with patio, seating and a barbecue on it, and the garage opens off it, holding the washing machine and dryer and room for bikes, boards and golf clubs.

There is a second sitting room with its own fire, a family bathroom and a small double on the ground floor, which leaves the stairs optional for an older dog and whoever sleeps down there. Upstairs are a king and a twin, and a reading snug on the landing. A welcome pack is left with doggy extras, and a stairgate is provided.

There is no beach in Tain itself, but footpaths cross the golf links to the shore of the Dornoch Firth, with dunes and tidal sands to explore with a dog. Across the bridge, Dornoch Beach is 5 miles away, a broad sweep of sand beside the town and its cathedral, and the long beaches at Portmahomack and Shandwick are within a short drive east.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Holly Tree Cottage dog friendly?

Yes, Holly Tree Cottage welcomes up to two dogs. The cottage has a generous enclosed rear lawn where dogs can roam freely, and a welcome pack is provided with doggy extras to help you settle in.

  • Are dogs allowed at Holly Tree Cottage year round?

The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth contacting the owner directly to confirm availability for your travel dates. Given the cottage's setup — enclosed garden, wood burners, washing facilities in the garage — it seems well suited to year-round visits.

  • What should I know before visiting Holly Tree Cottage with my dog?

Up to two dogs are welcome, and the rear garden is enclosed, so they can be outside safely while you're cooking or relaxing. The ground floor has a bedroom and bathroom, which is handy if you have an older dog that struggles with stairs, and a stairgate is provided if you want to keep them off the upper floor. There's no beach in Tain itself, but footpaths cross the golf links to the tidal sands of the Dornoch Firth, and Dornoch Beach is just five miles away across the bridge.
