Askham, Cumbria
A farmhouse and annexe sleeping eight near Askham, every bedroom en suite, with a large enclosed garden wrapping three sides of the house and a fire pit, two dogs welcome.
Howgate Foot gives eight people five bathrooms, and every bedroom in it has one of its own. It is a dog friendly farmhouse with an annexe near Askham, two dogs are welcome, and the enclosed garden wraps around three sides of the building with a patio and a fire pit set into it, far more ground than a party of eight usually gets to shut a gate on.
The utility is the first room that matters: coats, boots and everything a fell puts on a dog stop in there. Past it the kitchen and diner has window seats and a table that seats the lot of them. A snug and a ground floor twin with its own shower complete that level. Upstairs the lounge sits under a vaulted ceiling looking out over the garden, with two kings and a twin off the landing and a roll top bath among them.
The fire pit has been lit and the party has drifted out to it by ones and twos. Both dogs are running the garden's three sides as a circuit, which they have been doing since four and show no sign of tiring of. Somebody is up in the vaulted lounge with a book and the whole valley in the window, entirely aware that dinner is happening without them and unwilling to intervene.
Haweswater lies south beyond the fell, a reservoir with a drowned village under it and some of the emptiest walking in Cumbria around its shore. Great Asby Scar spreads limestone pavement over the high ground east. Dalemain and its gardens sit north towards Penrith. Between them a dog can be walked for a week here without meeting a queue at a stile.

Book with holidaycottages.co.ukFrequently Asked Questions
Is Howgate Foot dog friendly?
Yes, Howgate Foot welcomes dogs — up to two are allowed. The property has a large enclosed garden wrapping around three sides of the farmhouse, so your dogs can run freely without you worrying about the gate.
Are dogs allowed at Howgate Foot year round?
The listing doesn't specify any seasonal restrictions on dogs, but we'd recommend confirming directly with the owner when you book, particularly if you're planning a visit around busy periods.
What should I know before visiting Howgate Foot with my dog?
The property has a dedicated utility room where you can sort coats, boots and muddy dogs before heading into the main house — genuinely useful after a day on the fells. The enclosed garden gives dogs plenty of room to roam, and the surrounding area around Haweswater and Great Asby Scar offers serious walking with very little of the crowds you'd find elsewhere in Cumbria. Just bear in mind the two-dog limit when planning your group.
