Ivy Shepherds Hut

Kellaton, Devon

A shepherd's hut above the South Devon coast with an enclosed orchard to let your dog off in, no wifi, no television, and Beesands beach a mile and a half downhill.

This is the cheapest thing on our Devon list and one of the best ideas on it. Ivy is a shepherd's hut at Kellaton, a couple of fields back from the coast between Beesands and Start Point, with a double bed, a two ring hob and a shower room. There is no wifi, no television and not much mobile signal, which is either exactly the point or it is not. Two people and a dog.

Sit outside and do very little. Your dog, meanwhile, gets something almost nothing at this price offers: an enclosed orchard, set aside by the owners specifically for exercising dogs. Off lead, on grass, under fruit trees, with no lead and no car and no plan. Beesands Beach is a mile and a half downhill and scores an eight on our map, Torcross is two, and the Bolt Head to Bolt Tail coast walk at four miles is among the finest in Devon.

Worth having up front. One dog as standard, though the owners will consider two if they are small, so ask at the point of booking. The hut does not take children, so this is two adults and a dog by design, and the orchard is what makes that design work. Without it, a hut this size with a wet dog in it would be a long week. With it, the dog has somewhere to be that is not the bed you are sitting on.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Ivy Shepherds Hut dog friendly?

Yes, and genuinely so. The owners have set aside an enclosed orchard specifically for dogs to use, giving them somewhere to run off lead on grass under fruit trees without needing a car or a plan. It's one of the features that makes this hut work as well as it does for dog owners.

  • Are dogs allowed at Ivy Shepherds Hut year round?

The listing doesn't specify seasonal restrictions on dogs, so it's worth checking directly with the owners when you book. What we can say is that the enclosed orchard and the nearby coast walks make it a strong option whatever time of year you're considering.

  • What should I know before visiting Ivy Shepherds Hut with my dog?

The hut accommodates one dog as standard, though the owners will consider two small dogs if you ask at the time of booking. It's worth knowing the hut is compact, and the owners are candid that the enclosed orchard is what makes that work — it gives your dog somewhere to be other than the small space you're sharing. Beesands Beach is a mile and a half downhill if you want to extend the adventure.
