Salcombe North Sands

Salcombe North Sands is a sandy beach about a mile south of Salcombe town centre, sitting in a sheltered position at the mouth of the Salcombe Harbour estuary. At high tide the beach is largely submerged, but at low water a generous stretch of shallow, sandy foreshore opens up with calm, clear water that is good for paddling and safe for less confident swimmers. The Winking Prawn restaurant is directly across the road and has a well-established reputation for fresh seafood with a view of the water. Toilets are available a short walk along the road, and the car park opposite the beach makes it straightforward to access without a long walk from town. The South West Coast Path passes nearby, connecting north towards Snapes Point.

North Sands is dog friendly all year round with no seasonal restrictions, which puts it in a small and useful category among Salcombe area beaches. Dogs can access the sand at any time, and the shallow, sheltered water is easy for most dogs to get in and out of without difficulty. The beach does get busy in peak season as the combination of facilities, easy access and proximity to Salcombe makes it a natural first choice for families with dogs. Arriving earlier in the day in July and August is worth doing if you want a quieter experience. The Winking Prawn welcomes dogs, making it a practical stop for food before or after time on the beach.
