The Cottage Hotel

Hope-Cove, Devon

Yes. Dogs can stay in selected rooms.

A 35 bedroom hotel on the cliffs above the harbour beach at Hope Cove, where dogs can stay in some balcony rooms with sea views.

Walkers like to bring their dogs to Hope Cove, and The Cottage Hotel, on the cliffs above the harbour beach, has made itself a dog friendly hotel for exactly that reason. It is a 35 bedroom hotel, independently run since 1973, that calls itself quirky and traditional, with good honest food and a splendid Devon welcome.

Most room grades take well behaved dogs, the luxury rooms being the exception. That still leaves some balcony rooms with chairs and a great sea view, so you can sit out above the cove. Dogs must always be accompanied, so plan to keep yours with you rather than leaving them in the room. Whether a second dog can come along too, the hotel's pages don't say, so raise it at booking.

Dogs aren't allowed in the bar, though they are most welcome in the Herzogin Cabin and the Guest Lounge. The lounge sits in the oldest part of the hotel, arts and crafts in style, with a large fireplace at its heart, and the Cabin was salvaged from the Herzogin Cecilie, a four-masted windjammer that ran aground in Soarmill Cove in 1906. Dogs can't come into the restaurant, and the hotel doesn't mention where else yours might eat with you, so ask at booking. Cream teas are on any time, and dinner is a classic Table d'Hôte.

In 2025 the hotel won The People's Choice Best Hospitality Venue Award from Food and Drink Devon. Outside, the coast path runs directly in front of the hotel for walks with the dog. Hope Cove, the beach Wildpack lists for dogs, is 0.1 miles away, and Bolt Head to Bolt Tail Coastal Walk sits 3.7 miles off.

Facts checked October 2026 from the hotel's own website. Details can change, so please confirm anything important, especially the dog rules, with the hotel before you book.
